Feb 1 1925 – Sept 11 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our Mamma, Nonna, Zia, Santola, and friend, Aurelia Belgrado (Negherbon), age 96, who passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021. Aurelia was born on Feb 1, 1925, in Cagno, Trento, Italy, a beautiful village that she often spoke of with great fondness. She was the youngest of 5 children and faced the profound difficulty of losing her mother when she was only 5 years old. Aurelia shared her experiences of overcoming the hardships she and her family faced. She had a lifelong love of learning which blossomed during her time in elementary school. As a young adult, she cherished her time working in the family apple orchards, and caring for her family. In 1958 she immigrated to Canada to join her brother and sister-in-law, Oreste and Bruna Negherbon. She arrived in Port Arthur during the night and marvelled at the bright city lights, not knowing they were the lights of the grain elevators. In 1959, she met and married Rinaldo and together they raised their two daughters. As a family, they enjoyed picnics and visiting with friends, as well as fishing, blueberry and mushroom picking. They travelled together to Italy and New York, and with friends to Mexico. They were married for 49 years until Rinaldo’s passing in 2008. Aurelia enjoyed sewing and has knit many beautiful items. She spent time reading, doing word searches, playing bingo at the church and sometimes winning at the casino. During the summer months she looked forward to flower gardening, as well as preserving and freezing vegetables from the garden. She used this harvest to make her delicious antipasto and minestrone soup. She loved hosting special holiday dinners, especially Christmas. Aurelia also liked to share the occasional toast of Frangelico with her family and friends. Aurelia was a generous, loving and caring mother and Nonna. She loved giving and receiving hugs. She proudly attended all her family’s special milestones, graduations and sporting events. An intelligent, brave and wise woman who knew how she wanted things done. She was an active member of the Legion of Mary through St Dominic’s Church and a member of the Lady’s Venet Society. Mamma will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her daughters, Kathy (James) Gibson and Grace (Gary) Zarowski. Nonna enjoyed passing on her many life lessons and stories to her grandchildren, Steven (Jenna), Ryan (Trisha) and Erika (Tim) Gibson; Lindsay (Andrew) and Colin Zarowski. Numerous other relatives survive her. She was predeceased by her husband; Rinaldo, parents; Irene and Giambattista Negherbon, sisters; Maria and Anna, brothers; Oreste and Orlando, and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at St. Dominic’s Church, 130 Redwood Ave., on Friday, September 17th at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to service from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Covid protocols will be followed. Memorial donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, directed to the Ophthalmology or Cardiac Department (www.healthsciencesfoundation.ca/memorial).
