Anne McDonald
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Anne McDonald (Power/Hawco) who died surrounded by her family on April 24th, 2021 at the age of 65. Predeceased by her parents Patricia and William McDonald. Leaving to mourn her two loving daughters Janice (Robert Tee) and Carolyn (Andrew Windsor), along with her 5 grandchildren Rachel, Lauren, Alex, Elizabeth and Abel. She will be missed dearly by her 6 siblings Ellen (Max), Cathy, Christina (Les), Belinda (Charlie), Michael (Jennifer), and Mary Jane (Fabian), as well as her 9 nieces and nephews and her great-niece and nephew.
Anne was born on June 14th, 1955, in St. John’s, Newfoundland and raised in Rabbit town on Salisbury street with her siblings. She attended Our Lady of Mercy Convent and Holy Heart of Mary school. She had a distinguished 43-year career at Dominion Stores (Loblaw’s) where she was respected by her colleagues and many in the community. Her career ignited her sense of fairness and equality leading her to elected positions within her union and with the NL Federation of Labour where she served as the Chair of the Women’s Committee. She was a great supporter to the Sisters of Mercy, Ten Thousand Villages as well as the Misericordia Mission Fund. Dedicated to her 2 girls, she was a beloved member of the Dance Centre extended family and was a fixture backstage at the Arts and Culture Centre “call-sheet in hand”.
After retiring, Anne embarked on a new chapter of her life moving to Ontario to spend more time with her extended family. She lived a life full of travel and adventure, always planning her next event. She enjoyed a glass of wine and often tried her luck at the Casino – living every moment to the fullest. She was devoted to her family and put them first, especially her grandchildren.
Anne was full of compassion, empathy, generosity and always saw the best in everyone. She will be fondly remembered by her extended family and friends including Tish and Wilf, Marie, Randy and Christine, Mary and Calvin, Paula and Dave, Yvonne, Mary and John, Sharyn and Terry, Randy and Trudy, Calista and Butch, Mara, Liz, Sister Mary and members of the Power, Ashley, Hawco and McDonald families.
It was through innovative research, led and conducted by the oncology team at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto that she was able to enjoy a great quality of life for 4.5 years, living with her disease. We would like to acknowledge the exceptional care of Drs Saibil, Hogg, and Lau and the entire staff at Princess Margaret. We would also like to thank the team at St. Elizabeth Health Care and Mathews House Hospice who provided exemplary end of life care. She truly loved and appreciated all her caregivers.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to either Matthews House Hospice, or Princess Margaret Hospital.
