Anna’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, family member, and friend. Anna Smook Reimer was born in Poland, November 27th of 1927 to Janina Majewska and Konstanty Rudniski. She came to Canada in 1929 at the age of one and half. The family initially settled in Volin, moving to Highland Park 10 years later. Times were hard. Anna loved to learn and finished grade 8 before going off to work at the age of fourteen and a half in Hines Creek then in Fairview and Edmonton. The BC government paid her way to go pick berries in Mission, BC. Mom was a very fast berry picker but only made $5 – $15 a day. She worked picking berries and waitressing until 1947 when she took the train back home.
Her mother had hired Jack Smook to pick her up from the train in Fairview and in June of 1948 they were married. They had 4 children Barbara (Kitzmann), Robert, Darlene (Anderson), and Harvey. The children were taught to work along side their parents, farming and gardening. In those days little had to be purchased as they raised cattle, chickens, turkeys, geese, picked a variety of berries, wild and home grown, and always grew a large garden.
When moving equipment became too much they moved to the Dell district. Jack semi retired in 1985, renting out most of his land. Jack was killed that fall in a combine roll over, down on Howard Frazer’s river flat.
Surprise to us all, mom went back to school in Lacombe and sold the farm. There she met William (Bill) Reimer and they were married in 1990. Bill had a house at Silver Hills, near Lumby, BC where she had a beautiful garden. She lost Bill in 2012. Anna moved to Leduc, Alberta to be closer to family and spent the past year and a half in Stone Brook assisted living in Grimshaw.
She loved sports, especially baseball and stayed fit and active her entire life. She was an avid gardener and excellent cook. Anna was a master at feeding people. Her dream was to travel the world and for the most part she did so, traveling extensively throughout the United States, and abroad. She was active in her church and maranatha building services.
Anna was a strong soul and proved it to the end. She outlived two husbands and was second last survivor of 14 siblings, outliving them all at 93 years.
Anna is survived by her sister Irene Kasha (Larry), daughter Barbara Kitzmann, son Robert (Rhondda Tolen), daughter Darlene Anderson (Brent), son Harvey (Lila Edgson),grand children Sabrina Adams, Amanda Thibeault (Mark), Jack Smook, Rhys Smook, great grand children Daxen and Seth Adams.
