Obituary
July 30, 1983- October 18, 2021
A heart so large it encircled everyone – from the sweetest angel to the hardest ticket.
A laugh so hearty and a wit so quick that your presence made everything better.
A compassion so deep that it pulled people from the depths and lifted everyone up.
A mind so brilliant and original it created beauty and wonder and magic.
A capacity for love and kindness so vast that it created space for everyone.
An optimism so relentless that no challenge was too great.
A joy for life so boundless that you lived every day as if it was your last.
…On October 18, 2021, the world lost a bright light. Andrew Harvey of St. John’s, NL, passed away suddenly of natural causes at the age of 38.
Andrew was and is deeply loved by his family: his partner Jay Butler and daughter Ava Butler (St. John’s NL), parents Dan and Jacinta Harvey (Berwick NS), brother James Harvey, sister-in-law Amy-Lee Kouwenberg and niece Nellie Harvey (Sackville NB), sister-in-law Cathy Luis and Renato (Dartmouth NS), parents-in-law Helena and Joe Butler (St. Phillips NL), sister-in-law Melissa Butler (Canary Islands), and numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles. He was pre-deceased by his brother John Harvey.
Through his love of learning, Andrew earned his BA in History from St. FX, Bachelor in Social Work from Memorial University, and Masters in Adult Education, St. FX.
Committed to growing a better community Andrew’s engagements included social work, affordable housing, supporting the arts, political activism, Indigenous culture, and food security.
Andrew was a force multiplier for happiness – doubling and tripling the joy of any occasion. To the people who knew him, he was a consistent support, a loud perfectly timed laugh, and an encouraging force that made life richer, funnier, and infinitely more wondrous.
In honour of Andrew Harvey’s love of learning and community, we ask for random acts of kindness and compassion. If wishing to make a donation of time or money, please do so to a charity of your choice or consider a cause he was passionate about:
