André de Ste-Croix
1944-2021
André de Ste-Croix passed away on May 16th, 2021
at the age of 76 after a short, but courageous battle with
cancer.
André was born in Dover, England and was the son
of Leonard de Ste-Croix and Josephine (Pat) Bradley. He made his way
to Canada at the age of one with his mom, who was a British war bride
on the ship « Letitia » and arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax in
May of 1945.
His early childhood was spent in Gaspé where the
large and rambunctious de Ste-Croix and FitzPatrick families had long
been established. He moved to Dalhousie in 1952 with his parents and
brothers, so his father could work at the paper mill. He was very
proud of his Gaspé roots and his hometown of
Dalhousie.
André started working at the mill in Dalhousie at
the age of 17. He became a paper maker. A job that he loved and took
seriously. He retired when the mill closed in January 2008, after 46
years of service.
Everyone who knew André would describe him as
« a quiet man ». He was quiet by nature, just like his mother.
His « quiet » demeanor however could not hide how very
intelligent he was. Very well read and knowledgeable on a number of
subjects, including current events and sports, André was a
deep thinker and well earned his nickname of the
« Senator ».
André is survived by his wife of 47 years Linda
(Roy); his two brothers Reginald (Lydia) and Ricky
(Géraldine); his sister-in-law Lucia Roy; and
brothers-in-law Edward, Roger and Dennis (Tina), along with nieces
Carolle, Mélanie and Jennie and nephews Réal and
Travis. He also leaves to behind his godson Evan Englehart, with whom
he was very close.
Linda and his family greatly appreciate the hundreds of
expressions of sympathy by members of the community on our Facebook
post about André’s passing. Please know that they
were all read and were greatly appreciated.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the
Palliative Care Unit of the Campbellton Regional Hospital for their
care and thoughtfulness to André and our family during this
difficult time.
It was André’s wish not to have a
service of remembrance. He would have appreciated gifts in his memory
to the Restigouche SPCA or the Canadian Cancer Society.
