It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Alvilda Mae Miller on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at the home of her son, Gary, in Calgary, AB.
Villa, as she was known to her friends, was born September 10, 1919, to Franklin and Clara Steeves in Rosevale, Albert County, NB.
She married the love of her life, Talmage “Tal” Miller in February 1940, and they started their life together in Moncton, NB. They moved to Sydney, NS in 1950, where they raised their family.
Alvilda made many lifelong friendships through the St. Andrew’s United Church Couples Club and the Cape Breton Trailer Club. She was a lifetime member of St. Andrew’s UCW and was a member of the Riverview Y’s Menettes. Alvilda and Tal were instrumental in the formation of the Stornaway Society and the Stornaway Pipe Band. She was proud to volunteer for many years with the Canadian Red Cross Blood Services. Alvilda especially enjoyed modern square dancing, line dancing, darts, and sewing. Although she and Tal shared many journeys in their travel trailer, they eventually parked their trailer on their property in Boisdale, CB, where they continued to delight in the company of family and friends. They spent many winters in Vero Beach, FL and Alvilda continued to winter at their home there on her own, even after Tal’s death.
Alvilda was predeceased by husband, Tal; son, Bert Miller; sister, Marion Gogan; and brother, Arthur Steeves.
She is survived by daughter Carolyn Hains, Edmonton and son, Gary Miller, Calgary, as well as sister, Kathleen Smith, Moncton and daughter-in-law, Carol Miller, Coxheath. She is also survived by grandchildren, Krista (Tim) Lauder and Derek Cook, Edmonton, Lee-Ann (Rob) Redshaw, Sydney River, Pamela (Wayne) Parlee, Quispamsis and Craig Miller, Coxheath; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews in New Brunswick.
Special thanks to WeCare Health Services, Calgary for their support and care with Alvilda.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel and will be announced at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
