Obituary of Allan Cook
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Allan Cook on March 31, 2021 in his 75th year. Allan, was the beloved husband of Catherine (née Johnson) for 49 years and the proud father of Richard (Julie) and Allison (Jason). He loved his grandchildren – Olivia, Catherine, William, Alice, Rebecca, and Charlotte – dearly and will be deeply missed by them.
He is predeceased by his parents Luitjen and Dina Kok (née Slijm), sisters Fanny Huizinga (Hank), Ann Lenting (Wes), and his brothers Hendrik Kok (Grace), and Dick Cook (Lottie). He is survived by his sister, Wilhemina van Daalen (Peter), and his brothers Edward Cook (Elaine) and Richard Cook (Winnie).
Allan was born Eldert Kok in the Netherlands on October 8, 1946 and immigrated to Canada in 1950 with his family. As the youngest of eight children, Allan first moved to Parkhill and then later, Strathroy, where he attended school. Allan graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in marketing and turned his gift of gab into a career in lumber and hardwood flooring sales. He had a life-long love of politics, history, religion, and knowledge. After retiring, Allan spent many hours enjoying his time at the Hillsview Seniors Centre where he was an avid bridge player.
Allan’s love for Georgetown, and his dedication to community service, was evident from his active involvement in numerous organizations. He felt privileged to be a local councillor for eight years and a regional councillor for four years. This gave him the opportunity to serve on many boards and committees: Halton District Health Council, the Elderly Services Advisory Committee, and as Chair of the Halton Regional Police Services. Allan was also Past Master of the Friendship Masonic Lodge, President of the Georgetown Agricultural Society for two terms and was granted an honorary lifetime membership. As a faithful member of Knox Presbyterian Church, he taught Sunday School for over twenty years, served as an Elder for over twenty-five years, and as a trustee for the past few years. Allan also coached youth hockey and volunteered for Boy Scouts. He valued people and genuinely enjoyed getting to know them.
Allan was a strong person; he taught his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, discussion, and to enjoy a good debate. He will be greatly missed.
