Obituary for Alfredo Manalo Marcelino
January 1, 1944 – March 19, 2021
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, godfather, brother, uncle and friend Alfredo Manalo Marcelino on March 19, 2021, at the age of 77 at Royal Columbian Hospital.
He now joins his father and mother Pascual and Segundina Marcelino, sisters Marietta Marcelino Patricio and Lydia Marcelino Carlos as well as many other beloved relatives in heaven.
Left to mourn his death are his wife of 25 years, Heidi Pabon, his son Adonis James Marcelino, daughter Marie Doni Marcelino Juayang and her mother Antonia, son in law Medel Juayang, as well as Heidi’s daughters Florence (Kent) and Charlene and many other relatives and friends that he has left an impact on. This includes Alfredo’s siblings Jose (Josephina), Bayani (Espie), Narcing (Vilma) and Manuel, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. This also includes Heidi’s siblings Lance (Hope), Kenneth (Josephine), Alma (Juan Carlos), Marilou (Neil), Edwin (Sol) and William (Wendy).
He had a special bond with many nieces and nephews, cousins and many relatives in Canada, United States and the Philippines.
People knew him as Alfredo, Freddie or Fred, and he was also known as his CB radio handle “Amigo.” Alfredo had a heart of gold and a love for life. He was admired and respected by many. Born in 1944, he moved to Canada at the age of 25. After completing his education in Electronics in the Philippines, he worked as a loyal electronics technician who loved to train others and he was soon promoted to a Supervisor for AEI Telecommunications company. With an interest in business, Freddie also owned a modest electronics business and was once the proud owner of a family convenience store on Notre Dame in Winnipeg which was named ‘Marimar’ after his daughter Marie Doni. He could be called a “jack of all trades” as he was not only a Technician but also a Handyman and a Carpenter, often found tinkering in his basement or garage to create his latest innovations or busily working on renovation projects on his home.
Freddie had a love for Canada and often talked about the wonders of the country to family and friends back home in the Philippines. He was very persuasive as many of them followed his lead and joined him in Winnipeg where he resided for over 20 years.
Freddie loved to frequently plan picnics and go on fishing in many of the fresh waters of Manitoba.
He was a vibrant, spirited character that loved to entertain and meet new friends, often to talk about life over a good bottle of beer. Friends and family always looked forward to his parties especially on New Year’s Eve which also led into a huge celebration for his birthday.
Feeling a sense of adventure, Freddie eventually moved to Vancouver, BC where he enjoyed the milder weather, beautiful mountains and oceans. He met his wife Heidi and together, they had a son Adonis James with whom he built a life full of wonderful family adventures including crabbing at Barnet Marine Park. Fred continued on to work as a Technician at Statpower (now Xantrex) before changing careers to work at Burnaby and Royal Columbian Hospital delivering supplies and linens. While working at these hospitals, his coworkers and friends enjoyed his charismatic presence and fondly remember him with his sense of humour.
He enjoyed going for his daily walk from his home in Burnaby to have coffee at Metrotown with his friends and enjoyed playing his favorite table and slot games at the local casinos.
Freddie had a love for politics and was often found with his family volunteering and campaigning in support of his favourite local political candidates. He found joy working on his vegetable garden on the patio and also loved to take quick road trips in and around British Columbia and to the United States. He also loved to visit his relatives in the Philippines.
He was a true fighter that was able to make it through his many ailments. Freddie proved to be resilient and fight through in his final years.
We are heartbroken as his death came unexpectedly. We can be comforted knowing that he is now reunited with our Lord. We will love and miss him always.
A blessing and private viewing with be held at Amherst Mortuary Service Centre in Coquitlam on Saturday, April 3rd from 1-5pm. Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
