The family of Al Steele are devastated with the loss of a cherished husband, father, and grandfather on July 11th, 2021 after a sudden illness. His story ended abruptly with life events never to be fulfilled with wife Deb of 40 years, sons Joe, husband Adam and their son Elliott; Scott and partner Nicola; and daughter Sam and fiancé James.
Al will forever be known for his commitment to being the best he could be and doing for others. He lived up to his moniker “Big Al the little guy’s pal” always reaching out to those in need. Al was the youngest of eleven children of Helen and Harold Steele leaving nine siblings, numerous beloved nieces and nephews; and predeceased by baby brother Ronald Jesse. He was our constant advisor, support, and a calming influence with the biggest heart. Following Al’s retirement as a nurse (BPH; ROH) he was able to focus on his life-long passion of carpentry, renovation, painting, and everything in between. He relished opportunities for golf, kayaking, games/cards with family and best friends Stan and Denise McNish, and hikes at Charleston Lake. As a Father he took pride in teaching his skills to Joe, Scott, and Sam and sharing his knowledge with anyone who would listen: extending to family, friends and neighbours with a focus on prep and precision. “Measure twice, cut once!”. Al expected the best from everyone and inspired quality. He reviewed mistakes with a questioning grin while supporting ongoing efforts. His craftmanship is evident at “46” where this old house became a home, became our haven. Life on Murray Street will never be the same. Forever in our hearts he will remain.
As per Al’s wishes no funeral services will be held. The family have planned a “Tribute to Al” on Saturday, August 14th, 2021 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Tall Ships’ Building: The Quarter Deck (3rd floor above Moose McGuire’s restaurant), 6 Broad Street, Brockville. All who wish to attend are invited – with the hope pandemic restrictions are eased.
The family pet, our old dog Oscar, continues his watch for Al’s return home.
