Obituary for
Zinaida Turzansky
After a long life, Dobrodiyka Zinaida Turzansky (nee Onufrijchuk) of Edmonton fell asleep in the Lord on December 12, 2020 following a short illness.
Dobrodiyka Zina was born in Romashkivka, Volyn, Ukraine on November 12, 1922 – the sister to seven older brothers. She attended school in Lutsk, Ukraine, where she met her future husband, the late Right Reverend Protopresbyter Yurij Turzansky. After she finished her university degree in education, the couple were married in Lutsk in 1942, shortly before Father Yurij’s ordination. They were blessed with a daughter, Irene, in 1943.
Forced from their home during the War, Dobrodiyka Zina and Father Yurij arrived in Canada in 1949, with their young daughter, and Zina’s elderly mother, Anna Onufrijchuk. In 1950, they were blessed with a son, Andrew. Over the following years, the family moved throughout western Canada, following Father Yurij’s placements with the Church.
Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to the service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian community, including teaching generations of children in Sunday School and Ridna Shkola, and directing and singing in countless church choirs. She was a lover of Ukrainian poetry and literature and contributed works of her own to several publications. Above all, she was a passionate expert in traditional Ukrainian embroidery, and the collection of her beautiful handmade works remains a treasured family heirloom.
Dobrodiyka Zina is predeceased by her beloved husband, Father Yurij; daughter Irene Hleck (late Harry Hleck); and son, Andrew Turzansky. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Christine Rapp; grandchildren, Lisa Hughes, Katie Turzansky (Jerrod Dwan), and Matthew Turzansky (Ania Werbeniuk) and two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Hughes and Jasper Dwan.

Funeral Rite for the late Dobrodiyka Zina will commence Thursday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m. Very Reverend Cornell Zubritsky officiating with interment at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
