Obituary
After a lengthy illness, Bruce passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital.
Bruce is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Janet Koss, sisters Bonnie Unrau (George) and Beverly Downey, sisters-in-law Joan Koss and Jean Petteys, nephews and nieces Ryan (Tracy) Christopher, Alysia (Brett), Tyler (Stacey), Kyle (Kevin), Nathan (Teighlor), Zachary (Tessa), Kayla, Meghan (Jamie) and all their children. Bruce is also greatly missed by his canine couch companion, Stevie, who is lost without him.
Bruce was predeceased b his parents Gordon and Frances Toland, parents-in-law John and Jennie Koss, and brother-in-law Richard Petteys.
He grew up in Weston and was a member and past president of Brooklands Weston Legion. After almost 30 years at The City of Winnipeg Property Assessment Department Bruce retired in 2001 and was then “eligible” to attend the Retiree breakfasts every second Thursday with the other old guys. He enjoyed friendships with former work buddies, the Weston gang, friends from Paradise Restaurant on Leila and our wonderful neighbours. And rarely a day went by that Bruce was not at the Sal’s on Leila enjoying the company of friends he made there, including the staff.
He had a keen interest in history, sports, and current events, especially politics.
Bruce loved and had numerous dogs throughout his life including the five he and Jan shared-Zoe, Finn, Abby, Sadie and Stevie. Four were adopted from the Winnipeg Humane Society where he and Jan volunteered. Jan kept finding them and Bruce always agreed to give them a home. His sometimes-gruff exterior hid a soft and generous heart.
A special thank you from Jan to Dr. Mayba, Dr. Peretz, Dr. Mathew and the staff at 7 Oaks Hosital Renal Clinic, for everything they did for Bruce, giving us those extra years together. We almost made it to our 35th anniversary.
Love and thanks to Bev and Diane for being there for us during Bruce’s last weeks. I could not have gotten through this without you.
Thank you also to the staff at the Victoria Hospital for the care and kindness given us in Bruce’s final days.Due to current circumstances with COVID 19 a small private service has been held.
If desired, donations in Bruce’s name can be made to the Salvation Army.
