Warren Basil Ervine
June 04, 1934 – October 12, 2020
Age 86, died October 12, 2020 of prostate cancer at his home in Lower Sackville. Warren is survived by his children, Carolyn (Frederick) Harvie of Lower Sackville; James (Christine) Ervine of Anmore, B.C.; Stephanie (Mark) Zlomke of Plano, Tex.; and Richard (Cheryl) Ervine of Katy, Tex.; eight grandchildren; two nieces, and a nephew. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Owen (Donna) Ervine (84, of Ontario). Born June 4, 1934, a son of Basil (Brian) and Elsie (Solomon) Ervine, Warren grew up in Toronto, just west of the Humber River, and enjoyed the outdoors, roaming the grasslands and nearby abandoned farms.
He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Toronto in Engineering. Warren spent his university summers working as a geologist by foot, canoe, and float plane from coast to coast in Canada, often with the Cree and learning the language. He obtained his Ph.D. in geology at Stanford University, California. Upon graduation he worked as an engineer scientist at NASA for two years in the western United States on the first Earth Observation Satellite. Wanting to return to Canada, he became a professor of geology at the University of Idaho, the University of Waterloo, Ont., and eventually Dalhousie University, Halifax. Retiring early, he incorporated his consulting practice, GeoTech Surveys Ltd., which operated for 25 years. While working, Warren gave generously of his time, energy, enthusiasm, and talent as a volunteer for many organizations, including: Volunteer Probation Officer for Corrections Canada (25 years), volunteer counsellor in the local prison (17 years), Chair and Director of the Christian Council for Reconciliation of the Maritimes (10 years), Archivist for the Fort Sackville Foundation at Bedford’s Scott Manor House (14 years), Chair and Director of the Halifax Regional Trails Association, a Director of the Sackville Lakes Park and Trails Association, a Director of the local Friends of First Lake Society, and many other recreational and hobby organizations. Warren’s love of science and nature and his care for the environment were the foundations of many of his activities. He was a nature boy all his life and would carry up to 50 field guides in his car to identify everything he saw and heard on his trail walks. Warren was honoured in 2015 with the Citizenship Award by the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia and in 2017 as Volunteer of the Year for Halifax.
The outdoor funeral service and interment will be held at 1 p.m. on October 16th in All Saints Anglican Cemetery, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Warren to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
