Obituary of Victor William Dorman Brett
Vic was born on October 20, 1937, the last born to Frederick and Phoebe Brett. He was raised with his brothers Douglas, Arthur, and Herbert, in the community of Southern Arm (Pleasantview). On December 27, 1961, he married Phyllis Saunders.
He was an avid outdoors man who loved it in the woods. He could be found doing anything from fishing, berry picking, hunting, rabbit catching, salmon fishing – anything that involved the great outdoors. He could even treasure a walk in the woods – enjoying the sounds and smells of nature. In the early years he worked in the woods as a logger and on the water as a fisherman in order to finance his education. He was a stubborn and determined man. Someone once told him he would not succeed in university; this was just enough to push him to succeed. He travelled on the Newfie Bullet to get back and forth to university from Bishop Falls station. He convocated in May 1966 and received his second degree in 1969. He accomplished all of this while working and providing for a young family. He was a hard worker and determined to succeed at anything he put his hand to.
Vic worked as a teacher for 30 years in many towns throughout Newfoundland: Quirpon, Norris Arm, Pleasantview, Pilley’s Island, Burlington, Bishop Falls and Pt. Leamington. He retired from teaching in June 1990 and enjoyed 30 years of retired life … the same number of years he taught. Vic enjoyed keeping up on current events and was an avid reader. He especially enjoyed Newfoundland authors.
He was a volunteer with the fire department and the Recreation Committee. Vic was a member of the Salvation Army Men’s fellowship, where he loved going to special weekends with the men of the church. In addition, he did a term as corps treasurer, served on the CCM (Community Care Ministry) at church and was the head usher for many years.
He was also a ‘hobby farmer’; one that fed a lot of Point Leamington and surrounding areas for years. His vegetables will be missed; especially by his granddaughters who loved “Poppy’s vegetables”. In the last few years, he cut back his garden size. Above is a picture of his final harvest.
Vic enjoyed anything outdoors. His final moments were spent stowing wood for the winter. He leaves to mourn his wife Phyllis, daughter Glendene and her husband Don, son Dereck and granddaughters Mikenzie and Madison.
As a teacher he would often quote, “What you sow, so shall you reap!” I guess he will reap a great harvest.
Due to COVID-19 regulation, visitation and service will be limited with visitation being for family on Monday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 1:00 pm by invitation only at The Salvation Army Citadel, Pt Leamington. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pt. Leamington Salvation Army Cemetery fund or to a charity of one’s choice.
A family viewing will be held at Hoskins Funeral Home, Botwood on Monday, November 2nd from 1 to 4. Due to COVID-19 regulations, visitation and service by invitation only.
