Obituary
ELDER, Sr. Elizabeth Anna, osu
Sister Elizabeth Anna Elder, osu Prelate, was invited into the Kingdom of her God at St. Angela Merici Residence, on July 5, 2020 at the age of 85 years. Daughter of Joseph and Anna (Gerein) Elder, Elizabeth was born on November 27, 1934, second daughter among a family of eight girls and three boys. Life on the farm near Revenue presented long days of hard work, with many of the chores tended to by the girls who were oldest. Time to play and enjoy one another’s company was a built in, especially on Sundays. School days for Elizabeth (Liz) were spent in Cornell, a one room country school with nine grades. A couple of horses, sometimes rather wild, took them to school by sleigh in winter, but since the horses were also needed for farm work there were many days spent walking to and from school. Liz’s aunt, Sister Josita joined the SSNDs the year Liz was born. A letter from her Aunt Josita, written when Liz was about six, had been saved and at age 15 Liz found and read the letter. Sister Josita was asking whether Liz might be interested in becoming a Sister. Thus, a small flame was ignited in an open heart. When Liz was in grade ten, and the Ursulines were teaching in Revenue, Sister Benedicta approached her inquiring whether she had ever thought of being a Sister. Of course, Liz was thinking of joining the SSNDs, her aunt’s community. This did not sit well with Sister Benedicta, who quickly provided Liz with numerous books to read and so the seed to become an Ursuline was given impetus to grow. On August 15, 1951, Liz attended a profession day at Prelate. That September she was off to St. Angela’s Academy for grade eleven. In January, 1952 she entered the Postulate, and in August, 1952 became a novice as Sister Mary Christine. Since these were building years at St. Angela’s there was much activity – moving, scraping floors, cleaning after the building crew, as well as tending to the gardens at Prelate and at the river garden, and doing some studying to complete grades. Sister Christine officially began her life of ministry within the community as a homemaker in 1954, cooking, cleaning, laundry, including the starching of linens and collars, which proved to be a major challenge. Prelate, Fox Valley, Saskatoon, and Shaunavon were among her first missions. Following the Profession of Perpetual Vows on August 15, 1957 Sister Christine served in Fox Valley, Liebenthal, Cosine and back at Prelate where she took charge of the cows and the chickens, from 1963 -1965, dealing with any difficulty presented. Cosine and Goodsoil were her next areas of service until in 1968-69 she was back in Saskatoon continuing home making but also driving and shopping, as well as tending to additional activities as they came along. Liz’s desire to become involved in foreign mission work, which required either nursing or teaching, prompted her to complete Grade 12 and to attend University (69-71). Upon receiving her Teaching Certificate she was assigned to teach in Melville, as well as Tramping Lake, Goodsoil, Swift Current and from 1982-1987 in Dawson Creek with the Frontier Apostolate, and in Saskatoon in 87-88. Lastly she returned to Prelate to teach pottery at the Academy. In October 1980 she received her B. Ed degree with a major in Art and a minor in Psychology. Liz loved life and faced its challenges with courage. She loved fishing, skating, playing the clarinet and harmonica, painting, driving, skiing, curling, playing ball, horse back riding, and pottery. Many of these activities were self taught. As her life of ministry was growing, continuing and spreading with many moves, Liz found the need to take time to nourish her spiritual life. In September 1980 she joined the Credo program in Spokane, Washington. Built into this program was the enriching experience of visiting the Holy Land, Greece and Rome. Then in 1986 – 87 Liz spent several months studying Theology and Scripture with the Redemptorist Fathers at Hawkstone Hall, Shrewsbury, England. In 2003 she joined a band of Ursulines on a pilgrimage to Brescia, Italy, walking in the footsteps of St. Angela, our Foundress. She was also privileged to visit Old Quebec and the Ursuline Monastery where St. Marie of the Incarnation established the first Canadian Ursuline Community. In the fall of 1994, Liz returned to Saskatoon where she engaged in various volunteer activities, the most significant being her time at the Cancer Centre, which spanned eleven years. Her rich and fulfilling life was rudely interrupted by a cancer diagnosis, which she battled valiantly. Sister Elizabeth (Liz) will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her Ursuline Community and her family, her sisters Lena (Eugen Fitterer), Eva (Don Knobel), Margaret (Paul Hartlen) and Josie McGuire, and brothers Joseph (Linda), Paul, and Dale (Holly), as well as nieces and nephews. Liz was predeceased by her mother on March 31, 1992, her father on October 21, 1998, her sisters Evalina, Pauline and Anna, and her brother-in-law, Albert McGuire. There will be no funeral at this time. A Memorial Celebration will be held when circumstances permit. Arrangements in care of David Schurr – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
