Shirley Marie Dimmer
11 juin 1925 –
27 avril 2020
Shirley Dimmer (Schram) born June 11, 1925 passed away peacefully on April 27, 2020 in Toronto. Shirley was predeceased by her husband Peter. She is lovingly remembered by her children David, Diana (Sharmini) and Gregory (Elaine), her grandchildren Alexandra and Michael, her sister Margaret and her extended family. Shirley was very active and engaged and had a strong zest for life. She had a wonderful partnership in her marriage to Peter sharing their love for the sport of tennis. They worked together to run the Dimmer Tennis School in the 1970s and 1980s working to promote tennis at a grass-roots level. Shirley enjoyed many active years and friendships at the Queens Tennis Club in Toronto.
Shirley valued education and when her children had completed their university degrees she set out to get her own, as she did not have the opportunity when she was younger. She thoroughly enjoyed obtaining a B.A. from the University of Toronto through part-time studies and then a Masters when she was in her sixties. Shirley’s children were impressed with her determination and openness to learn new things throughout her life including taking up skiing in her late forties, and taking art classes in her eighties. She loved political science and was always current on the latest news and developments. She enjoyed using her own iPad in her nineties and followed all the online tennis results.
Shirley enjoyed travelling, spending time with her family and friends and was always open to new adventures and experiences including a trip to Sri Lanka just before she turned 80.
Shirley was an active member of the Kingsway-Lambton United Church and appreciated all the services and programs provided by the Church.
She spent her last nine years at the retirement home of Humber Heights Village. Despite many health challenges over the years Shirley was resilient and enjoyed her time there and was very active including teaching other residents how to play bridge. She was close to many of the excellent and caring staff at Humber Heights. The family is grateful to them for their friendship with Shirley and excellent care.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) or Princess Margaret Hospital.
