Shirley’s Obituary
Burrell, Shirley Ann – Age 64 of Greenwood, Kings County, passed away Saturday October 3, 2020. Shirley was born on April 12, 1956 in Annapolis, Nova Scotia to Alexander and Gloria (Mailman) Bennett. She graduated from Annapolis Regional Vocational Nursing School in 1983, and was a Licensed Practical Nurse until her retirement in 2015. A loving mother, she raised two children: Cassiopeia (born 1987) and Nicholas (born 1988). Shirley was a devoted lover of all things beautiful, and spent her spare time birdwatching and staying current on makeup and fashion trends. She was a patron of the arts, and enjoyed all types of music, theatre, and illustration. An accomplished tole painter, she held lessons for friends and neighbours while living in Cole Harbour. One of her greatest joys was seeing her family and friends perform music and plays in the house and on stage. As in her private life, Shirley dedicated her professional life to taking care of others. She was a caring nurse, often going above and beyond to make her patients comfortable, especially at the end stages of their lives. She was a staunch advocate for fair wages and pension benefits, and was a member and officer for nurses’ unions in Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories. She spent her final years caring for her mother, Gloria, in her home. Shirley was a world traveler; she lived in multiple provinces and territories, the United States and Australia, and had visited multiple countries in Asia and Latin America. She loved the hot weather, and could spend hours on the beach or by the pool. Most of all, Shirley was a caring mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was preceded in death by her father, Alexander, and her brothers, Alexander and Kenneth. She is survived by her two children, Cassi and Nick, her mother Gloria, her sister Karen, her sister-in-law Wendy, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service time and place will be determined in the future, so all may attend to remember her. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main St., Middleton, N.S. toll free 1-855-825-3448. In lieu of flowers, donations to honour Shirley may be made to Alzheimer Society Canada, Toronto Western Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Clinic Fund, or a charity of your choice.
