Ruby Cavell Strickland
November 7, 1948 – August 28, 2020
Having lived a full and beautiful 71 years, Ruby passed peacefully away surrounded by her loved ones, after fighting a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer.
She is predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Edith Legge of Cavendish; and parents in law, Wilson and Phyllis Strickland of Port Aux Basques.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory and celebrate their life together, her devoted husband of 48 years, Ronald (Butch) Strickland, as well as many close family and friends. Included in the large circle of family members whose lives she enriched are her four siblings and their spouses: Hazel (David) Legge, Hayward (Ruby), Emily (Vincent) Rodgers, and a very special sister, Rosalind. Ruby’s love and generosity extended to her many nieces and nephews, to whom she was like another parent, including Geoff (Angela), Brian (and her neighbour and friend, Marion), Janice Hill, Karen Legge (Dave Drodge), Wayne (Lisa) Rodgers, Shawn (Alison Phillips), Bob (Annetta) Rodgers, Gary (Tanya) Rodgers, and Dwayne (Niki). Her many grand-nieces and nephews were also near and dear to her heart, including Adam, Corey, Emily, David, Jack, Jessica, Catherine, Sarah, Amelia, Charlotte, Emma and Avery. Ruby was also fortunate to have developed many dear friendships that were a great source of joy and comfort during her life and her illness. Their names are too many to mention.
During Ruby’s 35 year teaching career, which spanned the west to east coasts of Newfoundland, she impacted the lives of many young students in this province and made life long friends with many teaching colleagues. Upon returning to teaching positions near her home town, Cavendish in 1977, Ruby and Ron (Butch) settled into a rich and active life involving family, friends, faith, love and laughter. Her contributions and influence on her community, church, friends and family will be her legacy.
As a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the visitation and ceremony to celebrate Ruby’s life will be private, however cards, messages, and condolences are gratefully appreciated.
Ruby requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cavendish United Church Cemetery Fund.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Warren’s Funeral Home, Dildo.
