February 12, 1957 – April 28, 2020
On Tuesday, April 28, 2020, Bob passed away suddenly in Airdrie, AB into the hands of his dear savior Jesus. Bob was the 2nd of seven children born to Elmer and Ruth Hunter in Dauphin, MB. He grew up in a hardworking, music filled home.
During his younger years, Bob kept busy with a paper route, scouts, grocery bagging, and lawn mowing. He played hockey and baseball in his spare time. It was during the hockey playing that he got the nickname ‘Flash’, apparently because of his speed on his skates! He spent time out at the ‘Hunter’s Happy Haven’ on Lake Metigoshe, getting in lots of swimming and water skiing and perhaps the odd bit of partying and trouble making.
After high school, Bob worked for Robinson Stores, which then lead him to live in Dryden, ON; Medicine Hat and Olds, AB; and Winnipeg, MB. He worked at numerous other construction jobs. In 1987, Bob completed a 2-year diploma in Business Administration at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, MB.
Bob married Phyllis McCallum in Boissevain, MB on July 11, 1987. They moved from their home in Brandon to Lethbridge, AB in 1989 where Bob worked for Novatel at the time. In 1992 when Novatel was bought by Nortel he transferred to the Calgary office. In 2010 Bob started to work for Eaton in Airdrie.
Bob and Phyllis welcomed a son Brett in 1991 and a daughter Erin in 1995. In 1997, the family relocated from Lethbridge, AB to Airdrie, AB where they continue to reside.
Bob was a devoted father and husband. He loved being involved as a hockey coach, a shuttle driver for many baseball and basketball games. He could often be found making trips to the ski hills, going for a round of golf with buddies and volunteering at school events. Bob was also an active member of his local church and a community volunteer for the city of Airdrie. Some of his other favorite things were going out to Carstairs to his brother-in-law’s farm where he loved helping with harvest and standing by patiently to assist with equipment breakdown. Yearly trips to Kimberley, BC at the NorthStar resort and returning to the communities in Manitoba where they grew up were top on his list. Bob always made time for family and friends and chatted with anyone he happened to come in contact with. He always helped out wherever he could, and was a willing ‘voluntold’ participant in many events that he and Phyllis were involved with.
Bob is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis; son, Brett; daughter, Erin; siblings, Patricia (Barry Hainsworth), Debbie (Lawrence Harper), Heather (Ken Michaluk), Donald, Sandra (Stuart Cameron); and sister-in-law Bonnie (Hunter) Brittner; brother-in-laws Clifford (Jean) McCallum, Elmer (Donna) McCallum, Angus (Donna) McCallum; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his brother, Blair; father, Elmer; and mother, Ruth.
A Celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Bob’s memory to Kidsport Alberta, Box 36107 Lakeview RPO, Calgary, AB T3E 7C6, or kidsportcanada.ca/alberta/Calgary/donation/
