Perley Ellis Baker January 26 2020

Baker, Perley Ellis – Age 81 of Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2020 in Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in East Jeddore, he was a son of the late Earl and Stella (Jennex) Baker.
Surviving are brothers, Ivan (Dot), Donnie (Terri), Jack (Marian); sisters, Phyllis, Leila (Charlie), Sandy; wife, Carolyn; daughter, Wendy (Raymond); son, Tommie (Lindsay); grandchildren, Shianne, Megan, Chelsey, Emily, Brandy, Brittney, Jessica, Brady; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by step-mother, Elise; step-sister, Joan.
Perley followed his father’s legacy of fishing at a very young age, by 19, he had a boat built and named it “WENDY”. He had a variety of deckhands, including his wife for many years and when daughter, Wendy was old enough, she too entered the boat to be with her dad. Years later, Tommie joined the crew. He purchased the vessel “WHO CARES” with his son Tommie, and passed the fishing legacy on for his son to continue the family tradition. He was dedicated to selling his catch to Baker’s Point Fisheries. At the age of 67, he retired from the fishing boat due to kidney failure. Perley (Dad) was a man that even though he was unable to fish, still found a way to be connected to the ocean. He was deeply involved in his home hobbies such as painting lobster buoys, rigging trawl, tying snoods, and mending nets. He enjoyed camping at Porters Lake Provincial Park with his family for 30+ years, enjoyed card games, especially 45’s, crokinole and having visits from his grandchildren. His family and friends will remember him as a strong, hardworking provider who had a will to live and enjoy life to his capabilities. Perley (Dad) was a great family man and a loving husband, father and grandpa. He married Carolyn Olive Stevens on March 1, 1969 in the United Church in Musquodoboit Harbour. They celebrated over 50 years together. During his 14 years in dialysis he was known for his fishing stories, his well-packed lunches, held the title for the longest and oldest dialysis line. During this time, he created a dialysis family and one of his highlights of the year, was the dialysis Christmas party. He will be remembered in section 6 as having his own way of doing things; like how he would get in his chair (by himself) and use the scale that he liked to use.
A special thanks to the dialysis unit in the Dickson Centre for the outstanding love and care they provided over these years. As well to Leo Bowser, taxi driver, for his dedication in making sure the travel to and from Halifax went smoothly. His children are very grateful for the extra years given to their father to allow him to stay home because of the wonderful care for him which was provided by their mother, Carolyn.
Visitation will be Saturday, 1-1:45 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2 p.m., both in First United Church, Musquodoboit Harbour, Rev. Joan Griffin officiating. A reception will follow, all are welcome to attend and celebrate Perley’s (Dad’s) life. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Red Cross.
Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
