Pauline Rae Sanford
1927-2020
Pauline Rae Sanford, of Coldbrook NS, passed away peacefully
at home, knowing the love of her family, on Tuesday, February 25,
2020. She was born on October 5, 1927 in Sherbrooke, Quebec to Walter
and Girlie (Leone) Buddell who loved her dearly. After moving to
Kentville with her parents at the age of 10, she attended Kings County
Academy and Mount St. Vincent University, and became a social worker
with the Children’s Aid Society in Kentville. She and Ken
were married on April 30, 1953 and enjoyed 60 years with each other.
They moved to Montreal, for a short time, while Ken was completing his
Master’s at McGill University. During that time, she
supported the family while working in the offices of the Ladybird
Knitting Mills. As her children were born, she cared for her
family and was integral in the development and operation of Ravenswood
Farms Ltd. in Coldbrook. Throughout her life she volunteered with
organizations such as the Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the
Glooscap Curling Club and Aylesford Lake Yacht Club. She coached
junior curling and was successful in coaching a team that represented
Nova Scotia at the Canadian National Championships. She actively
participated in her children’s pursuits watching and being a
driver to many swimming, hockey, curling, and sailing
competitions. Mum was behind the scenes in everything we did.
We all felt she was the strength of our family and the strongest woman
we knew. Our home and cottage were always filled with friends and
family and Mum made sure everyone was looked after and well fed.
Christmas was special for us because of Mum. Many friends have fond
memories of spending Christmas Eve at our house. We were thankful to
have this past Christmas with Mum and carry on some of the traditions.
She was always interested in what people were doing and never forgot
to ask about their lives. People who knew her truly loved her and many
who met her for the first time would always comment on what a
wonderful person she was. She is survived by her son, Peter
Sanford (Mary), Coldbrook; three daughters, Pam Sanford (Kevin
Bourke), Halifax; Dale Sanford (David Fraser), Glenmont; Lynda Sanford
(Stephen McDow), Aylesford Lake. She was predeceased by her
husband, Kenneth Sanford and infant son, Paul. Mum was looked
after in the latter part of her life by a special group of people that
she called « her girls » who became part of her family. Thank
you to all who allowed Mum to be at home and especially Tammy,
Carolyn, Joanie and Shirley who were with her in the latter months.
Thank you to Dave and Janice Nunn who were always available when she
needed them. Mum was a person who touched many people and
especially her family. Our hearts are broken, and we miss her
deeply. Please join us in celebrating a beautiful person and
a life well lived. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday,
March 15, 2020 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the
funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held on Monday,
March 16, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Dr. Judith Saunders officiating. In
lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valley Hospice Foundation,
SPCA or a charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted
to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
