On March 26, 2020, we said goodbye to our little spitfire Mom, Gramma, Great-Gramma and Great-Great-Gramma Pauline Nielsen. She was 18 days away from her 100th birthday. We all thought that with her tenacity and stubbornness she would easily make it to that milestone, but she suddenly grew tired. We are thankful her last days and hours were peaceful.
Pauline was born in Vancouver, BC and spent her entire life there, until we brought her to Castlegar a year ago to be closer to her family. To say she was unhappy about leaving her beloved Vancouver would be an understatement, but the wonderful staff at Castleview Care Centre helped her settle in to her new home.
Pauline was the youngest of 3 daughters, and the last of her generation. She was a talented artist and a champion bonsai grower. She was also very advanced in the art of Thai Chi, teaching classes at Little Mountain into her early 90’s. Thai Chi was definitely a big factor in keeping her tiny little body strong during her final years.
Pauline was under 5 feet tall, maybe 80 pounds soaking wet, but was a force to be reckoned with. Strong in spirit, determined, fiercely independent, and somewhat obstinate, she kept us on our toes! We loved the little matriarch so much and will miss her deeply.
She is survived by her daughter Kathy Barbier, granddaughters Colleen Provan and Leah (Tom) Carmichael, great-grandchildren; Trevor (Kelsea) Carmichael, Kevin Carmichael, Shayna Carmichael and Rachel Rosse as well as her 2 month old great-great-grandson Colt Carmichael.
All of her life, Pauline had great love and compassion for animals. She would take in stray cats, feed the raccoons and pamper her pets. Four legged or winged, it didn’t matter to her. As an expression of sympathy, a donation can be made to the SPCA at www.spca.bc.ca
Bill Clark of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements. You are invited to leave a personal message condolence.
