Obituary of Pastor William G. Burton
On December 10, 1940, our loving father, Pastor William G. Burton was born in the resettled community of Horse Islands, the third child to Pearce and Edna Burton. Hear us, since that day, the world has never been the same. His family and many of you reading this who sat under his ministry would vouch for that!
Today, it’s with deep sadness that we announce his entrance into the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at 10:28 P.M. on Saturday, April 11. When we knew Dad was close to leaving us , we were hoping that Dad would hang on and pass after 12:00 midnight, and enter glory on Resurrection Sunday. There would be something special about that! Yet, when when we stopped and considered the actual moment, and world time zones, Dad passed as the morning dawn was breaking over the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem (where our father visited in 2001 and 2011) Now that’s special too.
Dad’s first place of employment as a teenager, was in telecommunications at the Post Office on the Horse Islands where he handled mail and the sending and receiving of Island telegrams through morse code. Morse code became a second language to Dad, where he was able to remember all the dots and dashes right up into his later years.
After some years working at the Post, Dad along with his young wife, Taffie, and young family (Marvin and Shawn at the time), felt called to full time ministry with the Pentecostal Assemblies.
Dad pastored with the PAONL for over 50 years.
As a family, we believe many are in the kingdom today because of Dad’s commitment to ministry. To witness the salvation of an individual was Dad’s greatest joy!
Since 1966, Dad has pastored the following assemblies: Smith’s Harbour, Mings Bight, Glenwood, Port de Grave, Twillingate, Lewisporte, Red Lake, Ontario (PAOC) North West Brook, St. Anthony and New Wes Valley. Dad always pastored with a passion and had a heart for the flock that was under his care.
Yet, before the church, Dad was called to be a priest and father to his own family. He considered this his greatest and most important calling. He has left such a legacy of love, faith, laughter and humility to his children, grand children and great children.
As a family we were truly blessed for God to have selected William (Bill) Burton to be our father, our mentor!
Dad was also the most loving, doting and caring husband to our mother. For the most part, when you saw one, you saw the other. They were always together, whether it be a trip South to the beaches of Florida, a berry picking excursion on the barrens or at the bedside of an afflicted parishioner at the hospital. What they did, they did together. Mom was always such a strong support to our father during his ministry. She was his song leader, his soloist, sometimes his preacher, his minister of visitation, his secretary, the one who ironed (perfectly) his white handkerchiefs and made sure his rat tail comb was in the inside pocket of his suit.
Dad is survived by his totally committed and loving wife: Taffie
Sons, Marvin (Wendy), Shawn (Elaine), daughters, Cathy (Harold), Carolyn (Darryl) and Jennifer (Richard).
Grand-children: Sarah (Travis), Allan (fiance Ashley), Allie (fiance Liam) , Olivia, Hannah, Joseph, Jaden, Jacob, Abigail (fiance Nathan), James and Isaiah.
Great Grand-children: Tessa, Landon and Brody
Siblings: Harvey (Marie), Clarence (Ruth) Herbert, Ruby (Nevil) Bonnie (Gordon) Evelyn (Edgar) Larry, Garry (Edna), Barbara and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Dad is predeceased by: His parents Pearce and Edna, Parents in law, Allan and Alma Gillingham. Baby sister Shirley. Brother-in-law Dale Vaters, Sister-in-law Hope Burton.
We, along with our mother, would like thank the staff and care givers at the North Haven Manor, Lewisporte, who cared for our Dad in his final months/days and treated him with such dignity and respect.
Love to you all, Bill’s Family
Due to COVID-19, a service of celebration will take place at a later date.
