Myrtle Olive Greencorn
1927-2020
GREENCORN – Myrtle Olive (Fleet), 92 of Port Hastings, NS,
passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at Ivany Place, Hammonds
Plains. Born in Glace Bay, NS, she was the eldest daughter
of the late Holland (Holly) Fleet and the late Caroline
(Carrie) (Troke) Fleet of Louisburg, NS.
Myrtle grew up and attended school in Louisburg, then
attended Empire Business College in Sydney. After completing her
studies, she moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where she was Executive
Secretary at Firth Brothers, and later at Firestone Tire &
Rubber Company.
In 1951 she married Alex Greencorn, Glace Bay. They lived in
Hamilton until 1960 when she and her family moved to Canso and then to
Port Hawkesbury in 1961 before finally settling in Port Hastings in
1965. Myrtle was active in her community as a Brownie Leader in Port
Hawkesbury and instructing night classes under the Continuing
Education Program throughout Inverness County. She taught Sunday
School at St. Joseph’s church and was a member of the Port
Hawkesbury Evergreen Club helping with Meals on Wheels.
Myrtle had a great love for learning and staying current with
technology and the world around her. Her home in Port Hastings was
filled with well-read books. She was an early adopter of a home
computer and connecting to the internet and that interest continued
through her life. Just days before her passing she was on a
« Zoom » call with many of her grandchildren, watched
a granddaughter’s university graduation on her computer, and
« Face Timed » with other family members. Myrtle loved
to talk and would spend hours in conversation (in person or on the
phone) with anyone, especially family and close friends. Myrtle was
incredibly proud of her family and her collection of scrapbooks and
photo albums attest to the pride she felt.
Myrtle was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at age 65 and,
while it slowed her body, it did not slow her mind. She showed
incredible amounts of courage and resilience as she fought this
disease.
Myrtle is survived by her daughter Gwen (John) Stewart of
Cole Harbour NS, sons Glen (Brenda) of Middle Sackville NS, and Ian
(Patty) of Port Hawkesbury NS; and daughter-in-law Diane Glazer,
Fredericton, NB; eleven grandchildren, one great-grandson; three
step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren;
sisters Marlene Richards, Dublin Shore NS and Linda
(Clifford) Coveyduc, Dartmouth NS and sister-in-law Mary Annette
Greencorn, Port Hawkesbury NS as well as numerous nieces, nephews and
cousins. Myrtle was predeceased by her husband of 65 years
Alex, son Scott of Fredericton, NB, sisters Beulah Prevost, Halifax
NS, Joyce Gallop, North Sydney NS, June Byrne, Hamilton, ON, brother
Lester Fleet, Sydney River NS, and brothers-in-law de St
Denys « Puss » Richelieu, PQ; Dr Ernest
Byrne, Hamilton ON; Jim Richards, Dublin Shore NS; sisters-in-law Mary
(Jack) Brown, Toronto ON; Florence (Jim) Cain, Hamilton, ON; and
brothers-in-law John Greencorn, Port Hawkesbury NS; and Ted Greencorn,
Port Hawkesbury NS.
Myrtle’s family would like to extend their sincere
thanks to the staff at Ivany Place and Parkland at the Lakes for the
terrific care she received over the last several years, especially the
last few months.
There will be a celebration of Myrtle’s life
sometime in the future when we can gather and share memories of this
incredible person who touched so many lives. Anyone wishing to do so
may make a donation to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of
Canada.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of
Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may
