Monica Geraldine McLellan – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Monica Geraldine (Rector) McLellan, on December 24, 2020, at the age of 92, with her loving family at her side. Born in Advocate, Nova Scotia on March 9, 1928 she was the daughter of the late Dewis Walton and Ruth Magdalene (Field) Rector. Monica married the love of her life Sterling Thomas McLellan March 22, 1947. Together they raised four children and no matter where they lived, Monica always created a home full of love and laughter. They returned to Westchester Station where they built their retirement home. They were blessed to be able to spend 39 years there together. Mom was known far and wide for being a cook extraordinaire. We will all agree that she was the glue that kept our family strong and informed. She had many interests including sewing, cross stitch, Creative Circle, crochet, square dancing, knitting, reading and puzzle books, to mention but a few. She especially looked forward to the weekly Lexicon that she and Dad always worked on together. She enjoyed many hours around the quilting frame with family and friends. She looked forward to every opportunity to reconnect with her BINGO Buddies. During her life long journey she was a steadfast member of the Church. As busy as she was raising her family she found time to volunteer for the Elm View Rebekah Lodge in Middle Musquodoboit, United Church Women in Shubenacadie and Women’s Missionary Society in Westchester Station. Mom lived her religion every day with her kind gestures of charity, compassion and love. Their lives also included a love of their cottage, where they welcomed one and all and made memories we will never forget. Monica’s ability to make a meal for two or twenty two in the spur of a moment, depending who might show up for a swim, is legendary. Every person on the beach had the benefit of the McLellan vegetable plots. She loved to make preserves and would share the product with anyone who enjoyed them. As children we always knew Mom would welcome any extra friends or neighbours to our table. Mom also had a love of animals, from her precious last poodle Buster (in the photo), to watching deer, pheasants and snow buntings outside their windows. Her working career included The Royal Bank of Canada in Parrsboro, Regal Greetings and Gifts Salesperson, The Royal Bank of Canada in Shubenacadie, the Bank of Nova Scotia in Moncton and finally she worked as an artisan in a Ceramic Studio. She couldn’t have loved her family more and she showed us every chance she had, from the many kisses and hugs, to telling us in person or on the phone. Whether we were close at hand or miles away the one thing we knew for sure in this world is that she loved us. Monica is survived by the love of her life, Sterling. She is also survived by her children, Patsy Adams, Westchester Station; Thomas and Susan McLellan, Milford; Susan and Hugh Dickie, Halifax; Ruth Anne and Graham Conway, Hillsborough, NB; grandchildren, Carl Adams and Lara Scholey, Pointe Claire, QC; Aaron Adams and BJ MacDonald, Lower Sackville; David and Shannon McLellan, Brookfield; Aaron McLellan, Lantz; Janet and Jason Barr, Milford; Trudi and Peter O’Connell, Half Way Brook; James and Kimberly Dickie, Edmonton, AB; Mark Sheehy, Vancouver, BC; Laura Sheehy and Tim Garabed, Winnipeg, MB; Tarah and Lee Miller, Fredericton, NB; Jennifer Conway and Aniko Dani, Calgary, AB. She was also blessed with more than 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Rev. Dewis (Jean) Rector, Cornwall, PE; sister-in-law, Gwenneth (Stanley) McCormick, Maccan; brother-in-law, John (Christie Anne), Joggins; many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alexis and Annie (Ripley) McLellan; brothers-in-law, William McLellan and Earl Burbine; sisters-in-law, Anna McLellan-Green and Carol Burbine and two nieces, Elizabeth Rector and Margo Anderson. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home Oxford, and a funeral service will be planned at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting the funeral home website at www.mmcfunerals.com. Given that her dedication to the church was her foundation, donations can be made to the Westchester United Baptist Church, PO Box 5, Westchester Station, NS B0M 2A0.
Although it’s difficult today,
to see beyond the sorrow,
may looking back in memory
comfort you tomorrow.
