Michael Brian Maki
June 25th, 1961 – December 8th, 2020
He was our storyteller, brother, son, father, husband and friend – and it is left to us, who listened and lived in his company, to remember and tell his story.
Mike was a huge man with a big heart. A sense of humour that would fill you with laughter, joy, ease and comfort, all at the same time. He was inspirational to all of us, his wit, his laugh and his off the wall, unexpected, common sense (sometimes) comments would fill you with laughter.
So much of his life was pure humour in captive moments and he collected little stories throughout his life. He kept the good ones close and reflected on them often – shaping them into true tales of the human condition. Anyone who would listen between the laughs would find something more and his stories elevated the best things in a person and poked fun where it would make us better.
There was one year where he brought a truckload of rocks and sand over the Rockies and the prairies, over the shield and to the Nation’s capital so he could pan for gold in his living room. That was Mike, always digging for gold and finding it all around him.
A loving husband, he was always there for his wife, building a life and home together. This included building beautiful garden oasis together, with Mike buying all the tools needed for “future” projects. He was a role model to his sons and was always there to guide them through life, imparting them with his wisdom, letting them make their own mistakes, and occasionally calling them “donkeys” when they needed to hear it.
He will be missed by his wife Andrea, three sons Lukas (Kaitlyn), David, Steven (Christena), his mother Helen, late father John, his two brothers Tim (Rebecca) and Doug, and his large circle of friends and loved ones.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date when it is safe for all of us to remember Mike together. We will have an “open mic” night, where will encourage everyone to share their favorite Mike story.
As Mike would often say “Hey, look on the bright side”.
