COOPER, Melvin MacMillan
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Melvin (Mel) MacMillan Cooper, age 88, on May 28th 2020; a great father brother and uncle. Mel was born in Popes Harbour January 15th 1932 to the late Henry and Lillas, nee Murphy, Cooper. He can be described as a loving and devoted husband, a caring and supportive father, a wonderful brother, and a loving uncle. In his early life Melvin worked alongside his father and brothers as a fisherman and woodsman to help support his family. In the late 50s he joined the Canadian Coast Guard working, at first, on the ships where he made two trips across the Arctic Circle then moved to a labourer position where he spent the remainder of his career, retiring in 1989 with 30 years of dedicated service. Mel married Rose, nee DeWolfe , and created their home in East Ship Harbour where they raised a family and remained together until her passing. Looking for a fresh start, Mel moved to Lunenburg where he spent his remaining years. Mel enjoyed making kindling, visiting, and playing cards with family and friends many of whom are at Shore Boat View Campground where he kept his trailer. Melvin was fondly known as “Uncle Mel » by his many nieces and nephews and their children all of whom brought him great joy. Mel was predeceased by his wife Rose; brothers Sidney, Stanley, Ervin, Wyman, Walter, Arthur, Wallace, Raymond, and little Melvin; sisters Mae, Gladys, and Eva. He is survived by his daughter, Rosanne; son Jason (Namtan); sisters Ruby Pearl, Annie, and Lillian. Due to current restrictions, a public ceremony will not be held. A family celebration of life may be held at a later date. Online condolences and tributes may be made by visiting www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca
