Mary Rose Cardinal 2020

Obituary for
Mary Rose Cardinal
With profound sadness we announce the passing of our loving and devoted mother, Mary Rose Cardinal on November 20, 2020. She was a wife and best friend to our dad, Daniel Joseph; and to all her family and friends whose lives she touched with her genuine kindness, her warm smiles and her loving tenderness that she offered to us all.
Mary Rose Loretta was born on the Blood reserve which lies at the base of the Rocky Mountains and with Chief Mountain watching on August 23, 1953 and died on November 20, 2020, in Edmonton, Alberta. She is survived by her devoted husband, Daniel Joseph, who took care of each other for 44 years; loving sons, Jason and Greg; her furry floppy eared baby and best friend, Hunter; sisters, Patty Eaglechild (Cyril) and Mavis Oka Mitchell; brother, Delroy Oka; a list of special nieces, Janice Minoose (K-Webb), Rosie Costucci, Marlene Lavalee Langelier (Dan), Gloria VanDonnick (Louie), Andrea Eaglechild, Marlene Robinson (Rick) Crystal and Bernadette Oka; nephews, Maurice Minoose, Joe, Dion and Whalen Oka, DJ Oka Jr., many nieces and nephews from far away like Spirit Lavalee, Vic Patricia and Diane Vico, Donny Costucci and Eddy Unrah; great-nephews, Kyler and Kris Constucci and Kyler and Bailey Minoose and also David VanDonnick; her sisters-in-law, Lori Vico, Florence Cardinal; and her godson, Tommy Eaglechild. There are many more relatives and friends of the family that have come to know Mary Rose’s kindness, warmth and smile over the years, and she loved all of you.
Mary Rose was a stay at home wife and hockey mom driving her boys to countless games and practices, working bingos and organizing fundraisers for all the kids in our hockey programs. She loved spending time wrapping presents at Christmas and visiting with friends and family. She loved when we went back home to the Blood Reserve for the summers to visit and laugh with all her sisters, brothers and relatives and to see all the dancers and listen to all the drummers and singers during Indian Days in Standoff. Mom and Dad took us on family vacations every summer, and she really loved it when we took the Via trains for our vacations because she did not have to drive then.
She went back to school attending Grant McEwan Community College around 1989, then went to work at All Fashion Dry Cleaners thereafter for the next few years. She quickly became a top team member there and her employers recognized her efforts yearly with Christmas celebrations, and treated her and us like family.
In 1997 Mary decided to continue her education attending Concordia’s U.C.E.P program graduating from Concordia eight months later, then starting school at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Native Studies program where she excelled, which inspired me to also pursue Post Secondary studies. Mom loved reading and we always made sure she had new books to add to her little library.
After her time at school, she settled back into being a stay at home mom and wife. But this time it was to her many furry grand-babies whom she loved and adored. First there was Batman, then 2Feathers, then Hunter. Her love for her fur babies and animals in general displayed the kind and caring qualities that Mom put on display daily, selflessly and lovingly. God bless you Mom. We will all miss you so much xo. Miistaksoomahkihkinaaki – Big haired Sheep woman.
