Mary Margaret (Margie) Bonnar
Sydney Mines
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Margie Bonnar, age 84, announce her peaceful passing at the Northside General Hospital on Sunday, November 8th, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. Born October 21st, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Kay (MacDonald) Serroul.
Margie was born and raised in Sydney Mines with her twelve brothers and sisters, and it was there that she met and married her soulmate, Freeman. Margie was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she was proud of her family and often bragged about her grandchildren to anyone who would listen. She was a faithful member of Holy Family Parish.
Margie loved holidays and family get-togethers, any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. Open to all, her kitchen was never closed, you could just walk in, and people often did. Neighbours, friends, family, they all had a place to stay for a few minutes, hours, or days, to enjoy her famous cooking, a cup of tea, a card game or twenty, and many laughs. The door was always open, and the food was always plentiful. After her love, her hugs, and her kisses, it is definitely her cooking we will miss the most. She was an avid camper, loved dancing and bingo, and in her later years enjoyed long drives with her husband, trips to the mall, getting dolled up at the salon, and socializing at the Adult Day Program.
Margie is survived by her loving daughter Mary (Jake Rendell) Bonnar; grandchildren Stacy (Jamie) Billard, Jamie (Michelle Basker) Rendell and Shaun (Cheryl) Rendell; great-grandchildren Abby, Max, Isabel, Madelyn and Callen. Also left to mourn are her brothers Pat (Lenore) Serroul, Leo (Eileen) Serroul, Donnie (Kathy) Serroul; sisters Kay Ongo, Beverly Hemmings, Mona (Darryl) Bennett, Frances (Ron) Britten; brother-in-law Frank Barrasa; sisters-in-law Marlene Serroul, Carolyn Serroul, Brenda Billard and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Besides her parents, Margie was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Freeman Bonnar; brothers Jack, Joseph (Noonie), Tom and Robert; sister Rosie Barrasa; father and mother in-law James and Elizabeth Bonnar; brothers-in-law Jack Billard, Eddie Blanchard and Mike Hemmings; and sister-in-law Shirley Serroul.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Harbour View Hospital Adult Day Program for their kindness over the last few years. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Eugene Ignacio and the Northside General Hospital 2W and 4E nursing staff for the exceptional compassion they showed in caring for Margie and her family.
At Margie’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 13, 2020, at 10 am in Holy Family Church, with Fr. Fabian Ihunegbo officiating. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Margie’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
