Karl’s Obituary
DOANE, Karl Douglas- Barrington, It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of our dear and beloved father on February 17th, 2020 at the Roseway Hospital, Shelburne, in his 96th year. Dad was born October 25, 1924, in Halifax to Charles D. and Marion (Homer) Doane. After his early schooling he joined the army to serve his country during WWII serving with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery as a signaler. Originally scheduled for the D Day Invasion of France, his contingent was diverted to Italy and then on to Holland. As a result he often referred to himself as a “D Day Dodger”. During his time during the war while in Scotland he met and later married his Scottish bride—Catherine “Rena” Kerr. After the war he returned to Nova Scotia where he gained employment with Maritime Tel & Tel Company as a combination lineman/repairman and raising us, his three children. He was active for many years in church affairs and with the Volunteer Fire Department but, his first love and passion was the family camp at Echo Lake. He loved hunting, fishing, and tennis and he was an extremely talented natural artist. He demanded perfection in his work and never seemed to be satisfied with his paintings but those lucky enough to see or obtain his paintings would surely disagree. He was a natural taught artist and he once went to NSCA to study art but left after a week saying he knew more than they were teaching. We had so many laughs at his quirky ways and his sense of humour which he kept to the very end. Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was predeceased by his parents; our mother, Rena; and sister, Dorothy. He is survived by his sons, Kevin (Sheila), Barry; and daughter, Karen (Carl) Stewart; and his dearest cousin, Mary Stoddard; also, grandchildren, Carey, Jamie, Kyle, Evan, Andrew; and great grandchildren, Kaylee, Tyler, Breanna, Samuel, Danica, Dominic; great-great grandchildren, Lachlan and Haye. A special thanks goes out to our dear and beloved caregivers, Bridget Brannen and Melanie Brannen who gave our Dad “everything” and the best care one could ever ask for even while putting up with his crazy antics and sense of humour. He also received excellent care from the VON nurses and Roberta Hopkins who provided foot care, keeping his feet happy. We would be remiss if we did not mention the staff on the medical floor at the Roseway Hospital for the excellent care and compassion shown to our father. Dr. Keeler in particular did his utmost providing the best care and his compassionate nature truly amazed us. We owe you our sincere gratitude for attending to all Dad’s care. At Dad’s request (like our Mom’s) he wished to be cremated and his remains have been entrusted to H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Barrington. Also at his request there is to be no funeral. He wishes his remains to be scattered at Homer’s Rock and Echo Lake at a later date. He always said “put some of my ashes in the lake out front of the cottage so when you go swimming you’ll remember me.” Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Roseway Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
See yah at the lake Dad!
