Obituary
Joseph David Jimmy was born January 6, 1928 on the Thunderchild First Nation, born to David and Maryann (Nipisiwakask) Jimmy. Joseph lived with his parents until he was 4 years old when he was taken to Onion Lake Residential School. He stayed until he was 14 years old and returned home to started working at neighboring community farms. When he was 17 years old, he went to work on the railroad as a labourer. Joseph met his wife, Nancy Thunderchild, and they were married; raising 8 children of their own, and numerous foster children. Joseph served as the Chief of the Thunderchild First Nation for one term and as Council Member from 1960 until early 2000. He was a Council Advisor for many years following his political career. He served as an Appeal Tribunal Member on the Elders’ Tribunal because of his vast political knowledge. Joseph had a wealth of knowledge, that he generously shared with those who shared his company. Joseph drove bus for 25 years for the Thunderchild children that were going to school in Turtleford. He continued to transport children in later years, his dedication to the young was shown in his support to the Education System. Joseph was strong in both the Catholic and Spiritual Faith. Joseph was a big fan of the sports community, showing his support in his attendance at games and seeing off the youth on their sports trips. He gave his support generously to community members and continued to do so until his health became a challenge. He will be remembered fondly for his strength, faith, kindness and gentle humor. The Catholic Dioceses will miss him, where he travelled to surrounding communities and nearby urban centers to share his strong beautiful voice singing Cree hymns. Joe was a dedicated leader in the Catholic Church, he will be missed.
Joseph was predeceased by: his loving wife, Nancy; and his daughter, Florence.
He leaves to mourn his departure: his sons and daughters, Joseph (Mary) Thunderchild, Marlene (Reg) Bugler, Diane (Elvis) Pooyak, Wilfred (Lori) Jimmy, Annette Jimmy, Karen (Tom) Whitecalf, Angela (Murray K) Jimmy and Jonathon Jimmy; his sisters, Gladys Wapass-Greyeyes and Angelina Waskewitch, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sharing in the loss are several relatives, nieces, nephews and cousins.
