John Quiring
Born Feb 24, 1922 Died June 27, 2020
Peacefully, on Saturday, June 27, 2020 John Quiring passed away at the Riverview Health Center.
Born and raised on a farm near Dalmeny Saskatchewan, he grew up during the Depression, a fact which had a lifelong effect on him. In October,1944 he married Marie Friesen. Together they embarked on a semi-nomadic life beginning with stops on a Saskatchewan farm and in Ontario before he enrolled in religious studies at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg. Graduating in 1957 he pastored churches in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan, and Portage la Prairie. Moving to Winnipeg in 1965 he began serving as a chaplain at Headingly Gaol. After fourteen years of service there he became a family counsellor at Cornerstone Ministries, retiring in 1987. Once his wife Marie’s health deteriorated, he became her caregiver until her death in 2000. John was a man noted for his sense of humour and practical jokes, characteristics which tended to mask his caring spirit and wise counsel.
John was predeceased by six brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his son Kenneth (Laura) and daughter Myrna (Rudi), five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one sister, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
The family owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the staff and residents of Park Manor Nursing Home and East Park Lodge who enriched his life through their encouragement and participation in his volunteer service there.
Donations in honour of John Quiring may be made to: Park Manor Personal Care Home Cultural Club, 301 Redonda Street, Winnipeg.
Due to Covid restrictions a private family service will be held.
