Joan Anna Maass
(née Solomon)
1924-2020
On Sunday, May 17, 2020, at the age of ninety-five, Joan passed away peacefully at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Beloved wife of the late Gerry (Gerhart) Maass for sixty years. Dear mother and mother-in-law of Eric and Arlene Maass, Barbara Maass and Jean St-Amant. Proud grandmother of Aaron Maass (Sarah) and Simon St-Amant (Samantha Julien).
Joan loved literature, art, movies and music. She was an avid reader from an early age. Joan was a pioneer in that, from the age of eighteen, she always worked outside of the home. After completing secretarial studies at Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University), she first worked at Longue Pointe Ordnance Depot during WWII. She then worked many years as medical secretary at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and, at the age of forty-eight, fulfilled a lifelong dream and enrolled full time in a university Bachelor’s program in Library Science. Followed many happy years working at McGill University’s McLennan Library.
In retirement, Joan volunteered in literacy programs and wrote stories for their publications. Joan had a caring close-knit circle of friends who met regularly and she talked on the phone with them every evening.
Joan was the only child of her loving late parents Effie and William Solomon. Joan was a reserved and especially kind person who was always appreciative of the acts of kindness of others.
Her family sincerely thanks the staff of Manoir Westmount and Donald Berman Jewish Eldercare Centre for their attentive care during the past 10 years. Thank you also to Dr. Celia Nattel, her family doctor, and to the staff of the Jewish General Hospital for their excellent care over the years.
Joan will be terribly missed by her family and friends.
