Obituary
Alice Jane “Jean” Matthews (nee McMeekin) of Calgary passed away peacefully on May 6, 2020. Born in Connor Kells, Northern Ireland to Mary (nee Hutchinson) and Thomas McMeekin, she enjoyed a happy childhood filled with kind relatives, friends, pets, the joys of the outdoors, and casting her keen eye on the patrons of her parents’ country pub.
In 1954, Jean and her friend Vida Tate bravely ventured on a 4,000 mile “outing” to Canada – a decision she never regretted. She worked as a veterinarian’s assistant in Lethbridge and stenographer for Imperial Oil in Dawson Creek and Calgary.
Jean was a gracious woman, kind, gentle, thoughtful, and caring. She was also a talented cook, keen athlete, and lover of the outdoors. She, along with her beloved husband Dave, took great pleasure from their beautiful home and lovely garden, the gifts of nature, and the joy of helping others. Both Jean and Dave loved to travel, especially to Northern Ireland to visit family and friends.
Jean fondly remembered the friends she made in her Bible study group. Her faith sustained her throughout her life.
Jean loved art and music. Our sincere thanks to Elaine Quilichini and the Calgary Girls Choir for singing for Jean and other nursing home residents this past Christmas.
Many thanks to those who were by her side or in touch, the nurses and doctors at Rockyview Hospital, the nursing home staff, her sister Lily, nephew Bill, niece Sue Weaver, Marg and Sharon McKenzie, Kathy Stankievech and Gord Robinson, Betty and Roly Thomas, Mary Bates, and especially Mariam Sheik and Denise Morrison whose kindness and knowledge sustained her quality or life.
