Obituary of James Frederick Currie, New Waterford/Halifax
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Frederick Currie on September 3, 2020 at home in Halifax following a lionhearted battle with cancer.
Jim was born in New Waterford, NS, on June 22, 1944 to Ambrose Bernard and Mary Catherine (MacLean) Currie, the fifth of their nine cherished children. He graduated from the first Grade 12 class of Mount Carmel High School in New Waterford; he attended Xavier Junior College, Sydney; and, he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, NS. Following graduation and the subsequent completion of training and certification as a hearing aid audiologist, Jim established his own business in Halifax in 1977. He travelled throughout Nova Scotia and, in earlier years, Newfoundland, providing audiological services. He was member of the International Hearing Aid Society and served terms as Treasurer and President of the Hearing Aid Society of Nova Scotia.
On August 19, 1978, Jim married Mary Marcia MacDonald at Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. Together, they built a successful business from their Halifax office for over 35 years and raised their loving daughter, Maria, who was Jim’s pride and joy. From her birth, he kept anyone and everyone up to date on all of her achievements great and small.
Jim was tall and handsome, hard-working and fair, thoughtful and sincere, loyal and strong. Above all, he loved his family, and they adored him. He particularly enjoyed traveling with family to Cape Breton and PEI in the summer and to Hawaii and the Caribbean in the winter. His enjoyment of travel and music were only surpassed by his enjoyment of fine food and hospitality.
Jim is survived by his wife, Marcia, Halifax; his daughter, Maria (Robb MacDonald), California; sisters, Mary Ena Darby, Halifax; Colleen (Allan) Neumann, Vancouver; brothers, Lawrence (Susan) Currie, New Glasgow; brothers-in-law, Allister (Rhoda) MacDonald, New Waterford; Paul (Jeanette) MacDonald, New Waterford; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Constance Fogarty and Catherine MacLean; and brothers, Bernard, Byron, and David Bruce.
A special thank you to all the family and friends for their loving care and support during his final days. He truly felt loved and comforted.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. DUE TO THE PENDING INCLEMENT WEATHER, THE GRAVESIDE PRAYERS, BEING HELD IN MT. CARMEL CEMETERY, HAVE BEEN POSTPONED AND WILL TAKE PLACE ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 AT 11 A.M. WITH FATHER RAY HUNTLEY OFFICIATING.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A memorial mass will take place at a later date. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
We will miss his warm smile and his loving and generous nature. “What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us.”
