A dear and good friend to many, Iris Franks slipped peacefully away “between the night and morning,” on Monday 20th April 2020. Well known amongst her many friends from all walks of life, Iris treated everyone equally, and freely gave of her love to all whom she met. Born Iris Francis in East London, England, in 1932, she grew up with a sister and two brothers, all of whom predeceased her. Iris married Alan Frackowski in the early 1950’s. He was a Polish immigrant to England, who later became a well-known local artist, going by his shortened surname of Franks. After moving to Canada, they lived first in Montreal, then moved to Nova Scotia and had their home in Blue Rocks where Alan had his art gallery. In the art world, they knew many of the well-known artists of the times. Iris moved to Masons Beach after the death of her husband, and in her final years she lived in Bridgewater, where she had friends who were very dear to her. Iris had no children, but she remained in constant touch with her six nieces in England. She had suffered with ill health for some years, and as an independent spirit, she was determined to be active for as long as possible. She was a very spiritual lady, and was much loved and respected by those who knew her. She will be sadly missed, but always close in Spirit.
Her friends speak for her in thanking all the nurses, doctors and other hospital staff who have helped Iris in both Lunenburg and Bridgewater Hospitals, the Patterson Unit and the Veterans, and all those many others who have helped over the years, especially in the most recent years and in her last days. As Iris would say, “Thank you, that’s so kind of you.”
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Blue Rocks.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in her memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
