Hewgill, Clara ‘Muriel’
It is with great sadness that the family of Muriel Hewgill (nee Knox) announces her passing on Monday, April 13, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully at Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound two days before her 90th birthday.
Muriel was a lifelong resident of the Beaver Valley (Duncan, Quiet Valley and Thornbury). She worked most of her life in the apple industry, owning an apple orchard and working from the age of 15 until her retirement, in various apple packing plants. She also worked as a curator of the Beaver Valley Military Museum for eight years ending when the museum closed. Muriel was also known for her pie making, having assisted her friend Frances Clarke with making and selling apple pies to two local fruit stands for a number of years. She enjoyed crafts and at the age of 80, took up oil painting. She had a love of euchre and bid euchre, playing many times a week in her retirement.
Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her children Donald (Joanne) Hewgill of Meaford, Islay Hewgill of Owen Sound, and Brian Hewgill of Thornbury. She will be remembered fondly by her granddaughters Mandy Sherwood (Sebus Luiken) and Shawna Hewgill (Aaron Pal) of Edmonton, Brittany Shaw (Andrew) of Meaford, and by her great grandchildren Henry and Braden Luiken, and Brody and Cohen Shaw. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Keith Hewgill (Lois) of Meaford, by her many nieces, nephews and their families, and by her dear friend Fern Parks of Thornbury.
Muriel was predeceased by her husband Floyd Angus Hewgill in 1968 and by her son Robert Floyd Hewgill in 1993. She was also predeceased by her parents Wellington and Mary Knox, her sister Hazel McNichol (David), her twin Lloyd Knox (Irene), brother Noble Knox and infant sister Ora Knox.
A private service of committal and interment will take place at Thornbury-Clarksburg Union Cemetery. A celebration of Muriel’s life will take place at Grace United Church in the near future and will be announced after the Covid restrictions have been lifted and friends and family are able to gather safely.
