1939-2020
It is with profound sadness that we
announce the death of WO Henry A. Hibberts, CD
(Retd), age 81 of Springhill, N.S. Henry passed away at
home on Sunday, March 29, 2020, surrounded by his loving family after
a struggle with cancer.
Born in Springhill on February 27, 1939 he was the eldest
child of Theodore and Dolly (Johns) Hibberts.
Henry is survived by his wife of 61 years Marg, daughters
Sandy Meekins (David), Bonnie Langille (Ken), Kathy Hibberts (Greg
Greenaway), sons Greg (Holly) and Steve (Cheryl), beloved
grandchildren Marcie and Lindsay Meekins, Kier, Keegan and Kyler
Hibberts, sister Shirley Pettigrew of Keswick, ON, brother Ted (Helen)
of Peterborough, ON nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and brothers John, James
and Albert, brothers- in – law, James McNally, and Roy
Pettigrew.
The military played a huge part in Henry’s life. In
1956 he joined the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada (Black Watch).
After completing his service in the regular armed forces, he spent 35
years with the Reserve Forces serving with the 1 NSH (N) B Company.
Acting as curator of the Nova Scotia Highlanders Museum at the
Lieutenant Colonel Daniel J. Murray Armoury in Springhill was another
role he took pride in. Henry was also a noted collector, seller and
trader of militaria internationally and mounted military and service
medals for many.
His work years were also spent in the Springhill coal mines
and with DND as the caretaker of the Springhill
Armoury.
Both a handy man and gardener, Henry spent many enjoyable
hours in his workshop and garden. He was a member of the Springhill
Baptist Church, the Springhill AA Junction Group, The Royal Canadian
Legion Branch #17, served on the Board of Directors at the GOVRC
Workshop and was regional coordinator of Operation Christmas Child for
many years.
Henry will be remembered by many for his wit, resourcefulness
and generosity.
His family would like to extend their thanks to the many
medical professionals who supported him throughout his illness with
special thanks to Dr. Peter Blaikie, Max Read R.N., and VON
Cumberland.
Arrangements have been entrusted to A.H. Brown
Funeral Home (902-597-2361), 5 McFarlane St.,
Springhill, NS, where the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a service on
Saturday, July 18, 2020 at 1 pm, followed by visitation.
A Celebration of Life for Henry will be held immediately
after visitation at 2 pm, followed by a committal service in the
Hillside Cemetery, Springhill. Out of respect for the family
and other attendees, please wear a mask.
Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Nova
Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation or your charity of
choice.
