Harry’s Obituary
A week and a half after sharing his 90th birthday cake with his family, Harry passed peacefully at the Norquay Health Centre.
Harry was born August 4, 1930, to Fred and Elizabeth (nee Klein) Dredge in Regina, SK. At the age of 1 year, he moved with his parents to the homestead in the Parr View district, 6 miles north of Swan Plain. This was where he spent the majority of his life. It was home.
Harry’s formal education was at the Moss Side School. He once said, he “went all the way through school – in the front door and out the back!”
Since the age of 16 years, Harry started working in the bush. In fact, he spent most of his life logging, trucking, and operating all types of heavy-duty equipment. This type of work took him across Canada. Harry eventually became logging foreman for Neu Logging out of Hudson Bay. In amongst all this, Harry found time to establish a mixed farm. This strong work ethic, resiliency, and ability to solve problems took him far in life.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always up for a practical joke. He was also an engaging storyteller.
On October 23, 1967 Harry married Phyllis (nee Heskin) Brown, a widow from Pelly. At the age of 37 years, he became an instant dad to Scott and Roxane – both were under 4 years of age. Melody was born in 1968, Ron in 1969, and finally Corilee in 1975. Harry was a natural at parenting. He worked hard to provide the best for his family and give them every opportunity, but he also took time for drives to the lakes, weenie roasts, swimming, wildlife spotting, and the annual vacation to BC.
Harry loved being outdoors and when he eventually retired, he finally was able to spend more time fishing, going on quad derbies, and hunting. He also enjoyed going on crop checks with a very good family friend, Ken Severson. He made many calls to his kids ensuring their work was done and inquiring about crop status, how calving was going, etc. He was always willing to lend a hand, until physically he couldn’t anymore.
Harry was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Elizabeth; sister, Corrine at 10 years of age from diabetes; brother, Ron and sister-in-law, Linda; sister, Joan Prokopchuk and brother-in-law, Sam; and his son-in-law, Andrew Burym in 2016.
Harry’s memory will live on through his wife, Phyllis; children: Scott (Anita), Roxane (Loren), Melody (Kevin), Ronald, and Corilee (Bob); 11 grandchildren and his 7 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
A Public Graveside Celebration of Life Service was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 24, 2020, at Parr View Cemetery, north of Swan Plain, SK, with Pastor Terry Severson officiating. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Norquay Health Centre Auxiliary, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Harry Dredge.
