Hackwood, William James ‘Jim’
Jim Hackwood passed away peacefully at his home in Meaford on Thursday, June 25, 2020 in his 91st year.
Born on February 8, 1930, Jim was a son of the late William James Hackwood and Elizabeth (nee Chambers) Hackwood. He will be remembered fondly by his sister Marion Adams and her family.
Jim was predeceased by his wife Helen Ruby (nee Gott) McManiman Hackwood on February 27, 1999. He will be missed by his best friend Marjorie Merritt and her family.
Jim will be remembered respectfully by his daughters Teryl Sewell (Gord) and Candy McManiman (late Paul Prevett), and by his son John McManiman.
He was the wonderful grandfather of Connie Sewell Good (Kevin) and great grandfather of the late Quinn Manuel, Gavin Manuel (Bailey) and their son Quinn and Kyle Good; grandfather of Curtis Sewell (Kimberly) and great grandfather of Meagan Sewell (Jack Gilbert) and their children Nathan and Jayla Sewell, and Jesse Sewell (Meg McLean); grandfather of James Locke (McManiman) and his wife Shae and great grandfather of Kestrel and Savannah Locke; grandfather of Jacob McManiman (Kimberly) and great grandfather of Blayke McManiman; grandfather of Ann McManiman McConnell (Will) and great grandfather of Scarlett and Perri McConnell and Levi McManiman.
Jim served in the Canadian Military for 12 years. During that time, he was posted to Camp Borden and was also with the Meaford Range Armoured Division. He was sent to serve in the Middle East with the United Nations Peace Keeping Force on the Gaza Strip (1959-60) after the Suez Canal Crisis. He returned with an injury and then served as a maître d’ for his remaining army years. He proudly recalls serving the VIPs, or the ‘Big Whigs’, as he called them. After leaving the army he worked at the Collingwood shipyards and then later worked as a maintenance man at Kennedy’s Foundry in Owen Sound.
Jim and wife Helen eventually left Meaford and moved to Courtenay BC on Vancouver Island, wintering in Weslaco, TX. It was in 2001, after his wife’s death, that he returned to Meaford. For several years he spent winters in Texas and summers in Meaford.
Jim’s passion was working in his workshop. There he spent many an hour carving and woodworking. He was our go to person when we needed something fixed. Although he struggled with his health over the years, he never complained, always remained positive and was an example of perseverance. He remained a soldier until the end.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Jim’s life will take place at a later date. As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Meaford Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON N4L 1B9 to whom arrangements have been entrusted. www.fergusonfuneralhomes.ca
