Glen Marion Vekved
February 7th, 1941 – April 29th, 2020
Glen Marion Vekved of Westlock, AB, formerly of Flatbush, AB, was born in smith, AB the second youngest child of Gudmund and Marie Vekved. He grew up on a farm east of La Glace with his five siblings. In 1959, Glen went to Vermilion Agriculture College where he met his future wife Sylvia (Kochan). Glen and Sylvia married on October 10th, 1964, and then moved to Ft. Nelson, BC in 1965. In 1969, Glen, Sylvia and their three young children moved back to Flatbush, where Glen farmed with Sylvia’s dad John Kochan. During the next 20 years the family grew by two more and if he wasn’t working on the farm, he was driving a log truck for Hoffman Logging and Urchyshyn Contracting out of Chisholm, or hauling water for Whyte’s water hauling. Glen was a huge advocate of volunteering and volunteered in the community on multiple occasions. He was a representative on the Agriculture Service Board for fifteen years and with Sylvia they were part of the founding group that started the free pancake breakfast which was hosted during the annual Flatbush picnic serving hot cakes and sausage for many years. From early childhood, Glen had a passion for sports especially hockey. He was a Montreal Canadiens fan and could recite statistics, players, games and talk hockey for hours. Glen played college hockey for the Vermilion Tigers and coached his sons later on when they started playing. When his father-in-law retired from farming, Glen farmed with his eldest son James and then lent a helping hand when James took over farming in the early 1990’s. Glen had a reputation of being a premier equipment operator and truck driver, helping train his boys, grandsons and many others he worked alongside. Just ask any combine operator that was fortunate enough to have harvested behind Glen’s swathing. In 2012, when Glen’s health took a decline, he and Sylvia decided to move off the farm and into Westlock. Visits from his children, grandchildren, extended family and neighbours from Flatbush were thoroughly enjoyed and were spoke about for many days after. His sociability was such that he was able to converse and relate to many people that he met. He loved hearing and retelling stories of the past where his loud and infectious laugh could be heard throughout the house. Glen was extremely proud of his 11 grandchildren and hearing of their accomplishments. He would openly boast with pride on many occasions and repeat their feats to anyone around him. Though Glen struggled with his health the last few years, he was able to spend most of his time being cared for by his loving wife Sylvia, enjoying her company and compassion till his last days.
Glen is survived by his wife Sylvia; daughter Denise; sons James (Andrea), Todd (Michelle), Kris (Mandi); grandchildren Brenden, Sheldon, Madison, Skylar, Terrell, Ethan, Lukas, Emersen, Greysen, Ahlora, Owen; brother Ingvald (Marilyn); sisters Ada and Carol; numerous nieces and nephews. Glen was predeceased by his daughter Jennifer (1987); father Gudmund (1985), mother Marie (2007), brother James (1966), sister Eleanor (2012). At the request of Glen there will be no funeral service.
