GILBERT MICHAEL CMOC – DECEMBER 10, 1935 – SEPTEMBER 10, 2020
Gilbert was born on December 10, 1935 in Ituna, SK to Milko and Mildred Cmoc. He was the youngest of 3 children. Frances, his sister was the oldest with Donald in the middle. They were all about 1 year apart. The family moved to the Yorkton area – (the current farm site) from the Homefield area (Ituna) when Gilbert was about 9, around 1944. Their first crop was in 1945. The 3 kids went to the Raymond Country School which was a few miles away. Gil went to the Yorkton Collegiate until grade 8. He started farming at that time, being 14/15 years old. In the late 1950’s Milko and Mildred and Gilbert moved into Yorkton to a house on Darlington St. E. As well as farming, Gilbert also worked at Ross Fuel Oil delivering fuel when he and Joan started dating. He was 22 at that time. They met on a blind date and this November would have marked 60 years of marriage. Gil and Joan were married in 1960 and moved out to the farm in 1962 to the new house. He then started farming full time. Over the next number of years, Gil and Joan had 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Gilbert had lots of hobbies that kept him busy and entertained through the years. He collected coins, antique bells and brass items/horseshoes. He loved playing cards, whether it was just him and Joan, a great poker game with friends or just himself winning at Solitaire. Anyone who had the pleasure of playing with him knew he was a great adversary, and he usually came out on the winning end! In the earlier years when the kids were growing up you would find them camping predominantly at Good Spirit Lake, but also around the province at Madge, Greenwater or Kenosee Provincial Parks. There was always a fire going, ready for any visitors. He enjoyed snowmobiling as well and in the later years loved gardening (just like his mother) and did a stint with Joan in the Farmer’s Market where his creativeness came to light. Gil and Joan had an active social life, always celebrating Birthdays and Anniversaries. If not entertaining down “by the bar” for their own, they were out visiting with their circle of friends.
Throughout all this, though, his greatest loves were Joan, his Soulmate, and farming. They were married almost 60 years and never were apart except for a few days. He loved everything he had to do from sun-up to sun-down, and even midnight grain hauling if required. Whether it was walking the land or doing crop patrol, summer fallow, swathing, hauling grain, or just looking out the window/door from his spot at the table, he was where he wanted to be. “On the Lot”. Even after Cory took over the farm, he was still able to enjoy all the farming he wanted, by working alongside and teaching Cory everything he knew.
Gil had a certain way about him. He was “Country Classic”, just like the music he listened to. There was Johnny Cash, and then there was the other Man in Black, Gilbert Cmoc. He had a number of “Gilisms” that he created which have become a part of our lives: Mingling, All Together Now, Original Equipment, and the latest one, Too much Technology!, among others.
He was a great friend to many people, and you will never find a man with a bigger heart or more integrity. He loved his family and his friends and his departure leaves a big hole that we will never be able to fill. Gilbert leaves to mourn him a great number of people, but he will also be greeted by many loved ones as well. His wife: Joan. 3 Children: Traci (Howard) Kashuba of Zehner, SK, Bonnie (Kim Stinson )Kreklewetz of Regina, SK, Cory Cmoc of Yorkton. 6 Grandchildren: Curtis (predeceased), Clayton (Regina), Jillyn (Kelowna) Kashuba, Roxanne (Regina), Zane (McKenzie) (Saskatoon), Dylan (Regina) Kreklewetz, Step Granddaughter Shannon (Colin Legare) Stinson, Regina, SK.
His parents: Milko and Mildred Cmoc (both predeceased); Sister Frances (Wesley) Wotherspoon (both predeceased); Brother Donald (Audrey) Cmoc; Sister-in-law Joyce Wulff (Chris) (both predeceased); as well as numerous nieces and nephews from the Cmoc, Wotherspoon, and Young families, cousins and dear, dear friends.
No formal service at this time, a private family service will take place at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined, in Gilbert’s memory, memorials to one’s charity of choice may be made as tokens of remembrance.
