Obituary of Gilbert Maerz
Gilbert Albert Maerz passed away peacefully in his home on August 15, 2020 at the age of 80.
Gilbert was born on the family farm at Allingham, Alberta on October 24, 1939, the 7th of 9 children born to Samuel and Helene Maerz. He was predeceased by his father and mother, three sisters (Adelaine, Ada, Martha) and two brothers (Lloyd, Norman).
Gilbert is survived by his daughter Tamara (John Multon), and his grandsons Tyler and Nicholas, and his great granddaughters Ava, Jae-lynn, and Destiny Rae-Ann. He is also survived by his brother Arnold (Judy), his sisters Darlene (Barry Fink) and Eileen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Gilbert spent many years on the family farm helping his father work the land, but then he decided he needed to do something different and went to work for Alberta Wheat Pool building elevators. He travelled extensively across Alberta and was involved in raising many of the silent giants that dotted the towns and horizons across the province. After almost 20 years, and many changes (and a fall from one of the elevators) Dad hung up his carpentry belt and retired. He would spend quite a bit of time tinkering in the garage, or he could be found sitting on the bank of many a pond or in his boat on the lake, fishing and relaxing. Anywhere he went, he made friends, and is fondly remembered by them all.
