Geraldine “Jerry” Louise Slaunwhite – 81, of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully of natural causes at the Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building – QEII Health Sciences Centre on May 27, 2020. Born in Middleton, Nova Scotia on February 21, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Burris and Minnie (Kynock) Rafuse.
Jerry was a graduate of Kings County Academy and Mack Business College, before beginning her career as a medical secretary at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax and later, DVA in Ottawa. While living in Halifax, she met the love of her life and best friend, Harry. They married in 1967 and had two children.
Jerry was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. Jerry was an active Anglican Church member throughout her life, volunteering with many church, hospital, and community organizations. She was also physically active her whole life, and enjoyed walking, running, aerobics, camping, and family functions.
Jerry is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Harry; daughter Deborah (Gregory) Beck of Bridgewater; son Derk Slaunwhite (Kim Hayes) of Dartmouth; two grandchildren Rachel and Colin Beck; and brother Ralph (Debbie) Rafuse of Windsor, Ontario. In addition to her parents, Jerry was predeceased by her sisters Jean Moore of Kentville and Joyce Stacey of Red Deer, Alberta.
The family would like to say a special thanks to the healthcare providers, especially Dr. Daniel Carver, at the Abbie J. 9Lane Geriatric Assessment Unit for their exceptional care of Jerry in her last days. Also thanks to her dedicated family doctor, Dr. Cindy Marshall; Geriatric Specialist, Dr. Melissa Andrew; and the kind and caring staff at Bayshore Home Health.
Memorial donations may be made to the St John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Middle Sackville, or the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
