Obituary of George Grumm
Hallelujah! Peacefully and surrounded by love on Monday, April 6th, 2020, George Grumm went to his new eternal home. What a celebration that must have been!
George was born in Romania on Dec. 4th, 1941 to mother Maria and Father George. During his early years, he experienced many hardships due to WW2, including the loss of his father. He immigrated to Canada with his mother and two brothers John and Michael. He still had memories of coming over on the ship that landed in Halifax on Jan. 1949.
His desire was to return to his homeland with his mother one day, but that was not to be.
Once in Canada, the family settled in the Whitemouth area, close to Vassar, MB. Here is where his family grew to include his new father Frank Hovorka and later three more siblings Edward, Sandra and Marlene.
Growing up on the family homestead, he helped on the farm, trapped and worked in the bush camps. Life later took him to Winnipeg and even out east to Ontario to work. He eventually ended up spending many years in Winnipeg, where he drove semi trucks for various companies. During this time, he was blessed with his four daughters Melanie, Melinda, Angel, and his stepdaughter Rita who he also raised as his own. Family was so important to him and he always helped out whenever he saw a need.
His hobbies at this time were playing cards with friends and being an avid league bowler. Boy, could he ever get those strikes!!
Change came again, and he and his family then moved to Ontario, where he worked in the logging industry. It was here where he could really enjoy gardening, hunting, snowmobiling, camping and fishing.
Whenever a family member or friend needed help, you could always count on George to be there for you. If you needed something fixed, his motto was «If I can’t fix it, it can’t be fixed!» His heart was bigger than most and he proved that over and over again. He truly left his foot and handprints on many people. George could be rough around the edges at times, but he had a heart of gold. «What you see, is what you get,» was another favorite saying of his.
He was a real joker and loved to tease and scare people when he could.
Humble as he was, he did take pride in how his golf game had improved throughout the years, on the actual golf course and in the video games he played alone and with his beloved nephews.
Tiger Woods was his hero!
Getting out on the links with his daughter Melanie and future son in law John was an event he thoroughly enjoyed. He was so looking forward to shooting some more balls with them! I guess it will have to be in heaven now!
He also enjoyed spending extra time searching the woods for lost golf balls and had accumulated an impressive collection he loved to share with his family members.
He loved the Blue Bombers and was overjoyed when they finally won the Grey Cup last year.
During his occasional down times, he enjoyed watching CNN, following anything to do with politics, watching over and over again one of his favorite movies (titanic / the green mile) and occasionally going to try his luck at the slots.
Right to the end of his life, he continued to do what he loved doing most. Anything to do with being in the outdoors. Whether it was fishing, golfing, helping with farm work, berry picking, cutting firewood, gardening, trapping nuisance beavers, canning various pickles, sauerkraut and jellies, he was always busy!
Our family rejoices knowing that George is enjoying life in paradise now, as he accepted Jesus into his heart, as his Lord and Savior on March 20th, 2020. What special day that was! Meeting him with open arms, would have been his mother, two dads, grand parents, brother in laws John and Thomas, sister in law Roberta, nephew Kevin, nephew’s wife Erin, as well as many other relatives and friends. What a reunion that must have been!
Left to cherish his memories here are his four daughters, future son in law, three brothers and their families, two sisters and their families, four grand children, three great grand children, nephews and great nephews, nieces and great nieces, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends.
The family would like to thank all the family and friends for their prayers. The wonderful care for so many years from Dr. Gwynneth Van der Byl, the entire health care staff and chaplains at St. Boniface 5E and 5B and Concordia NW3. You were all truly God’s angels here on earth. Thanks as well to Pastor Dave Dickey for his support to the family during this journey, and to Brad Unger from Birchwood Funeral Chapel for his compassion and assistance during this time.
One of George’s favorite sayings, «At the end of the day, it is what it is.» In reply, «It’s not goodbye, but see you later!»
2 Timothy 4:7-8
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
John 14:2-3
In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also.
