Obituary of Faye Myrtle Somers
Faye Myrtle Somers of Howe Hall, Shannex Parkland Saint John, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, April 14, 2020. Born March 5, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Myrtle (Downey) Somers.
Faye attended elementary school in Saint John and took her high school studies in Nova Scotia. Her studies included Business Education, Beauty Culture, Wig Making and Teachers’ College. She studied in New Brunswick, Maine, Maryland, Ontario, and Hollywood, California. She held professional certification in Public School Teaching, Public School Administration, Guidance and Counselling, Home Economics, and Beauty Culture and was licensed to teach in New Brunswick, British Columbia, and the State of Maine.
Faye’s employment history began in the beauty field. She first worked as a beauty salon operator in Saint John before becoming the Beauty Consultant for Thomas Supply and Equipment Agency, working out of Ottawa and travelling across Canada.
Faye was employed at Saint John Vocational School as a teacher and department administrator in Beauty Culture and in Guidance and Counselling. She retired as Vice-Principal of Kennebecasis Valley High School, Quispamsis, in 1987, having been appointed there when the school opened in 1976. Following her retirement, she was employed for 1 ½ years as Registrar of the New Brunswick Hairdressers’ Association, Fredericton.
Other organizations where Faye held positions of responsibility over the years include: Foresters Ladies’ Lodge, the local Principals’/Vice Principals’ Association, Canadian Federation of University Women, and last but not least, Founder and Organizing President of the New Brunswick Hairdressers’ Association, serving on the board in several capacities.
Faye also served on several city and provincial boards and committees, among which are: Home Economics Curriculum Committee, NB Guidance Association, Social Services, Boys’ and Girls’ Club, Junior Achievement, and The Department of Advanced Education.
Faye was active on a continuing basis in the field of Theatre Arts, working backstage for many local productions, and in 1985 she directed costuming for the Canada Summer Games.
Faye authored the book “Saint John Vocational School In Retrospect”, which was published in December 2001 by Dreamcatcher Publishing of Saint John. The book records the history of the school and relates the significant role it played in educational reforms in New Brunswick.
Faye was predeceased by her sister, Joy Somers, in 2015.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). Due to current health advisories, a Celebration of Faye’s Life will take place at a later date, to be announced.
