It is with tremendous sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Estelle Greene announces her passing on Sunday, December 27, 2020. Beloved wife of Simon for forty-eight years. Loving mother of Alan Robert, Linda (Hillel Finestone), Sharon (Robert Spence), and Carolyn (Mitchell Melnick). Dear ‘Nana Estelle’ of Elana, Benjamin and Danielle Finestone; Alan, Judith and Naomi Healey-Greene. Daughter of the late Alexander and the late Pearl Greenberg. Sister of the late David Greenberg; and sister-in-law of Frances and the late Arnold Smith. Estelle will be lovingly remembered by her niece and nephew, Shelley and Danny Smith, and their families, her niece Debra Greenberg, and by numerous cousins and friends.
Estelle was born in Winnipeg and was educated at the University of Manitoba. She obtained both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Social Work. She worked for the government, first in the area of Mother’s Allowance, and then in adoption. Estelle loved her work. After moving to Montreal, she worked at the Jewish General Hospital on the Orthopedics service. She eventually met Simon on a blind date and was smitten with him and his three young daughters. After they married, they had Alan Robert, who was a brother adored by his three sisters. Estelle became an excellent cook, hosting elaborate holiday meals. She had a passion for cooking, baking, playing bridge, politics, shopping, and the teachings of Dr. Oz. We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Estelle’s devoted and highly compassionate caregivers, Maria and Sarah, the staff of CLSC René-Cassin and the Palliative Care team at Mount Sinai Hospital for their dedicated care and compassion. Special thanks to her medical team, Dr. Owen and Dr. Borod. A private graveside service will take place. Shiva strictly private. Contributions in Estelle’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
