Obituary for
Elizabeth Jean Hill (Brown)
December 9, 1916 – January 30, 2020
With great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing in her 104th year, of Betty HIll, Ebess to her family and caregivers.
She was the daughter of Lawrence and Jean Brown (Orme), beloved wife for over 45 years of the late Clifford Hill. Loved and loving mother and mother-in-law of Barbara (Bill Davis), Nancy (Bob Attfield), Jo (late Brian Fisher) and Susan.
Proud grandmother of Tad, Scott and Christopher, Todd and Wade. Adoring great-grandmother of Hayden, Max and Sam, Griffin and Parker, Grayson and Analise Elizabeth. Predeceased by siblings Larry Brown (Kaye) and Vic (late Hank Lane). Remembered with much love by nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Betty was a lifelong resident of Old Ottawa East, living most of her life at 388 Main Street, her father’s family home, until she and Cliff moved to the house her father built on Brown Street. She was a font of historical and social information on the area which she was always keen to share, and she was surprised at the interest of others in her stories.
Betty was truly the heart of her family and she saw them all as her greatest accomplishment. Family members referred to her as a « Force of Nature », especially those much younger ones trying to keep up with her during one of her « five-minute-bees »! She engendered love, respect and admiration in everyone with whom she came in contact, right up to her final days.
She was brought up and remained a person of faith, and considered her commitment to church and community second only to her family.
The family will be forever indebted for the incredible care « Ebess » received at the May Court Hospice. The extraordinary compassion, the skilled and consummate care by the staff and the devotion and dedication of the many volunteers were a solace and support to all the family. They gave unstintingly to Ebess and her family for the time she was in residence, imparting advice, giving comfort, and sharing their strength. Special thanks to Dr. Daniel Vincent and his team. Many thanks also to Betty’s multi-generational, network of family and friends who corresponded, visited, and made sure she always had fresh flowers in her room.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), on Friday, February 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. A Service to celebrate a long life, well lived will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, February 15 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow.
For those who wish, donations may be made in Betty’s memory and honour to Hospice Care Ottawa (May Court), 114 Cameron Ave. Ottawa ON K1S 0X1, or Southminster United Church, 15 Alymer Ave.. Ottawa, ON, K1S 5G4,
She will be greatly missed.
« I tell you most solemnly you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy. For I shall see you again and your hearts will be full of joy and that joy no one shall take from you. » John 16.20 & 22
