Daniel L. Lockhart
1948-2020
« The fabric of my life has been woven with
golden thread. These threads have held me together and made
me grateful for my family, friends and
memories. »
These words were written by Daniel L. Lockhart, who after a
brief illness, died on Wednesday, September 9th, 2020, at the age of
72 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital.
Dan was born on June 21st, 1948, the son of the late Roy and
Joan (Murphy) Lockhart.
He is survived, after 52 years of marriage, by his cherished
wife Jane, son Brent, daughter-in-law Michelle and treasured
grandchildren Zach and Katie. He is also survived by his brother John
Lockhart (Wendy), brothers-in-law Bob Doiron (Pam), Michael Doiron
(Diane), sisters-in-law Christine Doiron and Tammy Doiron and several
loved nieces and nephews. Dan was predeceased by his parents,
brothers-in-law Pat and Peter Doiron and sisters-in-law Cheryl and
Jeanette Doiron.
Dan worked for the Bank of Canada in Toronto then returned to
UNB and obtained his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Teaching and a
Masters in Education Administration. In 1976 he began a career for
which he was born. He became a beloved, respected teacher for 30
years. Many students still remember how he instilled in them a love of
learning, the joy of Art and the magic of words.
Every day was an invitation for adventure for Dan; golfing,
hiking, marathon running, travelling or exploring his culnary skills.
His cheerfulness was infectious. Dan often articulated his personal
wisdom; golfing was an apportunity to laugh at one’s self, good food
should fill a plate, his cheesecakes contained no calories and
laughter can trump sadness. His deeds were proof of his generous
nature; visiting seniors, volunteering at schools and for 3 years at
Norman House, a group home for mentally challenged children. Dan’s
love for Jane, Brent and family knew no bounds. They illuminated his
life and were a sheltering presence during his last days. Faith guided
Dan’s life; he lived in harmony with this, never befriending doubt. He
recently wrote, « God is in my heart, and I trust Him
implicitly. » When death became a reality, his courage was
inspirational. He taught us how to leave this world with grace and
dignity.
The narrative of Dan’s life was a pathway of generosity. It
is with gratitude we fill the silence of our grief with memories of a
humble, gracious man who blessed so many lives.
A Mass of Christian Burial for family and invited guests will
be celebrated from St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers,
donations made to the Palliative Care Unit at DECH, Multiple Sclerosis
Society of Canada or a charity of the donor’s choice would be
appreciated by the family.
