Obituary of Cornelius Wiebe
Cornelius Wiebe went home to be with Jesus on June 12, 2020, just weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. We said goodbye with aching hearts but find comfort in knowing he is free from suffering and with his beloved Saviour. We imagine a glad reunion with Al and Randy, when Dad entered Heaven’s Gate.
Dad was born to Peter and Agnes Wiebe on March 23, 1936 in Steinbach, Manitoba. He had a happy childhood growing up with 5 brothers and 5 sisters. Dad attended grade school in Greenland. He was a scholarly person and went on to high school and university, becoming a public-school teacher. As a teenager he gave his heart to Jesus, was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, and was a steadfast and faithful servant of the Lord.
On June 28, 1959 he married our mother, Velma Boese. Even after sharing almost 61 years together, it seemed too soon for him to go. Their home was blessed with two daughters. When Dad was questioned « only 2 girls? » his emphatic reply was « we HAVE two girls! »
After a year of teaching in Manitoba, Dad and Mom spent 4 years at Sunchild, AB, where he taught at the mission school. Dad adjusted well to the Alberta climate and chose to settle in Linden, Alberta. He spent the next 8 years teaching at the Dr. Elliott School.
At the age of 35, Dad was ordained to the ministry. He cherished the church and her doctrines and taught them to the end of his life. One of Dads greatest services as a pastor was his listening ear. He was involved in Church committees and gave many hours of service in God’s work. He was also instrumental in the starting of our private schools in Alberta. After his ordination, Dad changed occupations and became administrator of the Linden Nursing Home. Later he turned to grain and poultry farming. It was something his family could help with when he was occupied with his church duties.
A real highlight in Dad and Mom’s life was the 3 years they spent at the mission in Gentry, Arkansas. Here they both enjoyed the opportunity to help with school teaching, along with Dads pastoral duties. They made many lifelong friends and have enjoyed travelling back to see them over the years.
We as a family remember with fondness the 9 years Dad and Mom spent in Abbotsford, BC. We loved to visit them in this beautiful province where Dad helped pastor the church. He spent 5 years as administrator at Val Haven Nursing Home before his retirement. Here they learned to love a new set of friends and family. We considered it our other home.
In 2000, they returned to the Linden area to support their daughter after the loss of her husband. They deeply grieved the passing of their son-in-law, Allen Unruh and ten years later their grandson, Randy. We will always remember his tearful ending to many prayers . . . « and meet the loved ones who have gone on before. »
They made their home in the town of Acme and became part of the Swalwell congregation. They enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family in the community. Dad spent many hours in his wood shop on Wanda’s yard. He was always up for any project we desired. We are all blessed with much of his handiwork.
Dad and Mom loved to travel. They spent a lot of time visiting family and friends as well as exploring new sights. One of dad’s dreams was fulfilled this last fall when they were privileged to visit England with Duane and Jolene, Casey and Claire.
His daily devotional prayer always included his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, often mentioning them by name. His last words and message were « Be faithful. Let’s meet again ».
We are thankful we were able to care for Dad at home in his final days. We as a family want to express our appreciation to all the nurses and caregivers who made this possible.
Waiting for him in glory are his son Al, his grandson Randy, his parents and parents in law and many brothers and sisters.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Velma, daughters Nancy and Virgil Unruh and Wanda Unruh: his beloved grandchildren: Jolene and Duane Klassen, Patrick and Katrina Unruh, Jason and Caitlyn Unruh, Sharla and Tyler Boese, Scott Unruh and six precious great grandchildren – Casey, Claire, Finn, Lucy, Gabriel and Lia.
Dad’s family: Nellie Wohlgemuth, Irma and Leonard Dueck, Lottie and Eugene Quasso, Peter and Norma Wiebe: Mom’s family: Susanna and Ray Megli, Jake and Viola Boese, Verden Boese, Bernice and Fred Esau, also many nieces and nephews who were all special to him, as well as other relatives and friends.
