Charlotte was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA on July 18, 1921 to Horace Cecil Provost an Episcopalian priest and Virginia Irving Gowan a Philadelphia socialite. Soon after Charlotte was born her parents divorced and remarried. Her father moved back to Alaska and her mother moved to California. Charlotte was raised by two elderly maiden Aunts in a mansion in Philadelphia where she attended the Quaker boarder school Westtown School, founded in 1799.
After high school Charlotte moved to Manhattan and lived in an apartment on Fifth Ave across from Central Park while attending New York University. When the war broke out, she enlisted and trained as a nurse and served in the Pacific as a Navy Nurse.
After the war Charlotte completed her college education on the GI Bill getting her BA, Masters and PHD in English while in San Diego.
In 1948 Charlotte married Howard Davis, an Episcopalian priest. Howard and Charlotte served in parishes in San Diego, Nevada and Seattle. Howard died in 1963.
While in Seattle Charlotte became a professor of English at several different colleges. On retirement in 1985 Charlotte was awarded Professor Emeritus.
In the 60’s Charlotte served as a missionary in the Philippines, and she taught at the University of the Philippines Baguio. Charlotte also served at the University of the U.S. Virgin Islands in St Thomas and was instrumental in setting up the university. She often served on The University by the Sea, a program where students traveled by ship, sailing the world while studying. Charlotte travelled all over the world. She said there were probably half a dozen countries she hadn’t been to.
Charlotte’s passion was training and breeding Golden Retrievers in the USA and Canada for over 70 years. After retiring Charlotte moved to Surrey and eventually to Mission where she had her kennels. She was a life member of the Canadian Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club of BC and a Charter member of the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind and Pacific Assistance Dogs.
Charlotte, all her life had been a faithful Christian and member of the Anglican Church. While residing in Mission she was a member of St John’s/Holy Spirit, Whonock and then St George’s, Maple Ridge.
Several members of St George supported Charlotte through the last years of her life and especially through last few months. Her friends from the Kennel Club were very supportive as well. Charlotte had no blood family, but these friends served as her faithful family. Charlotte went into hospital just after Thanksgiving 2019 and then into complex care in Langley. She was residing in Bailey House in Maple Ridge at the time of her peaceful passing. We are all thankful for the care she received from care staff and friends.
